(Updated) Dates set for special Senate primaries; “Debate” held in the 8th today

The dates to select the GOP nominees in the 8th and 37th Senate Districts have been set.

In the 37th, Marianne Honrniko [1], Will Nance [2] and Steve Hunt [3] have until Dec. 1 to convince Republicans that they’re the best candidate to succeed Attorney General-elect Ken Cuccinelli. The primary will be held at the Centreville High School Media Center, 6001 Union Mill Rd. in Clifton from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. (h/t Nova Tea Party Patriots [4])

In the 8th, there will also be a firehouse primary between Rosemary Wilson [5] and Jeff McWaters [6] on Dec. 5, as they hope to replace Virginia Beach Sheriff-elect Ken Stolle. Polling times and locations have yet to be announced.

Also in the 8th today, the Virginia Beach Taxpayer Alliance (VBTA) held a purported debate that Wilson was unable to attend.

The VBTA held the event anyway with Wilson’s seat vacant.

According to the Wilson campaign, she remained flooded-in due to the aftereffects of Tropical Storm Ida. Additionally, they stated that the debate organizers never formerly requested Wilson to attend, but that the event was held in hopes that each candidate would participate.

But the McWaters campaign isn’t exactly buying Wilson’s claims.

“Considering the short time-line of this campaign, we had hoped to give voters every opportunity possible to compare both candidates side-by-side,” said Travis Smith, McWaters campaign manager. “McWaters for Senate has formally requested three public debates with the Wilson campaign, all three were declined. The empty chair with Rosemary Wilson’s name on it at the VBTA forum this morning was unfortunate, but we plan to attend every public debate available to us, with or without our opponent.”

Update: From Aaron Gulbransen, spokesperson for the Wilson Campaign:

“Rosemary and McWaters just did a forum this past week with the Beach Suburban Women’s club and we have 2 more forums on the calendar.”
