Back in April my friend Steve Bierfeldt was detained at St. Louis airport for carrying $4,700 [1] in cash and insisting on his rights when challenged by the TSA. Six months later, the ACLU lawsuit on behalf of Steve has been dropped since the TSA has issued revised rules to prevent “fishing expeditions” [2] for unrelated crimes such as confirming prescriptions of drugs taken on board. Of course, carrying cash is not a crime and the harassment Steve received simply displays how the government is willing to use the citizen’s unawareness of their rights against them. Fortunately, Steve knows his rights and stood up for himself and countless others.
