Amundson to retire; advantage McConville

Jay McConville just got a gift.

Del. Kris Amundson, a leader in the Democratic Party of Virginia, had decided that it is time to leave office after two decades of public service. McConville was challenging Amundson for her seat in the House of Delegates and now will face Fairfax County Democratic Committee Chair Scott Surovell [1].

Amundson cites in her retirement letter financial reasons for leaving office, stating that the consulting business (which makes up a substantial portion of her communications firm) has been cut-back severely by her clients.

Amundson, whose liberal viewpoints occasionally ran her into disagreement with this blog, still served with integrity and endeavored to do what was right by her constituents and the people of Virginia.

However, other blogs, including BVBL, attacked Amundson regularly…and didn’t stop after her announcement.

BVBL wasted little time [2] going after Amundson, calling her leader of the “House Homosexual Caucus” and claimed that she was having a difficult relationship with House Minority Leader Ward Armstrong.

Amundson believes the criticism stems from her defense of former candidate Jeff Dion. She also says that her and Leader Armstrong speak daily and have s strong working relationship.

Such rhetoric from those supporting Republicans doesn’t particularly help McConville’s cause, as it shows them to be stuck in the politics of personal destruction vice a debate over ideas.

Regardless, McConville has a great opportunity to win the seat; especially as he presents himself as a strong and qualified candidate; a candidate who is an entrepreneur, a veteran, and has a long-standing history in the community.

As long as McConville sticks to the issues and his qualifications, he has a golden opportunity to pick up this seat for the GOP.
