Conservatives, Remember There’s Still a Borg Out There

While much of the right-of-center population in this country (I won’t call it ‘conservative’ in order to avoid any incendiary and tangential conversations) is embroiled in the birth-pains of conjoined twins, there remains a liberal movement out there and it’s instructive to pay attention.

No less than twice in the past 24 hours have examples of “what liberals believe” been so apparent.

First, I have really been enjoying listening to Cathy Lewis’ “Hearsay” on WHRV 89.5FM in Hampton Roads. If you want excellent local programming, and don’t mind hearing some things that aren’t in the typical echo-chamber from a superb broadcaster, you should tune in (there’s a pun in the link).

However, yesterday on her show was a discussion of expanding light rail in Virginia Beach.

The typical pro-arguments were being levied – “good for business,” “there are more riders than you might think,” “you can’t compare our costs to what it has cost in other cities,” “the ballot question is unfair because it makes it seem city taxpayers bear the whole burden,” etc.

But the argument that caught my attention the most was of a lady who was staring at her streetcar picture from 1910 on its way to then “Camp Story” and, later, the Princess Anne County waterfront.

Her claim is that the automobile which put these streetcars out of business is learned behavior and that the people need to be “taught” the error of their ways and be “instructed” on why the new light rail system is going to be “good for them.”

Uh-huh.

This liberal ideation is further reinforced by a link I saw on Facebook this morning from former RPV Chair Kate Obenshain:

Really? We now need a federal program to “teach” people how to buy food?

If the difference between a conservative and liberal couldn’t be more clear in two examples I don’t know what is.

Liberals will tell you what to do; they will “instruct” you how to think; you will be assimilated!

At least if you’re “right of center” you have the chance at independent thought.

But, then again, maybe not.
