Rob Bell to Formally Announce Bid for Attorney General Nomination

Delegate Rob Bell, the presumptive frontrunner for the Republican nomination for Virginia’s Attorney General in 2017, plans to make his entrance into the race official next Thursday, according to a report from the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The announcement will formally be made at a 2:30 PM press conference at the General Assembly Building in Richmond on Thursday, December 3rd.

A former prosecutor from Charlottesville, Bell first ran statewide in 2013, squaring off against the eventual GOP nominee Mark Obenshain, who prevailed over Bell in the 2013 Virginia Republican convention following a spirited and intense race which received wide acclaim from all corners of the party for what leaders described as its gracious and gentlemanly tenor.

Immediately following that race, Bell wasted no time in campaigning hard for the entire GOP ticket, earning him praise from many die-hard Obenshain supporters, whose support Bell is widely expected to receive during his next bid for nomination to the same office.

Bell has made no secret of his desire to again seek the party’s nomination for Attorney General. For the past year, he has traveled the Commonwealth, engaging the grassroots at party events and sending out voluminous numbers of his famous hand-written notes.

With his legendary work ethic and skill at raising funds, Bell can be expected to run a repeat of his very intense campaign, buoyed on its second attempt by years’ worth of grassroots engagement alongside the goodwill accumulated following his last attempt, which remained free of infighting, mudslinging, and smears against fellow Republicans during a difficult year for the state party.

As the Virginia GOP works to rebuild its fortunes following a string of crushing losses in statewide elections, party insiders widely see Bell as the man to beat in this race, whose overall, well-rounded strength may even prove sufficient to clear the field and avoid repeating the costly nominating process partly blamed for sapping GOP strength in 2013.

Virginians weary of the partisanship shown by current Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring will find Bell’s commitment to focusing on the duties of the job to be a welcome relief from Herring’s record of putting ideology before the demands of the office.

With 2016 around the corner, it may be a while before the campaign mail begins to flow, but in the meantime, Republicans may help themselves to a pouring of Virginia hospitality at Bell’s planned suite at the upcoming Republican Party of Virginia’s annual Advance at the Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs on December 11th and 12th.
