Bernie Sanders: “To Hell” With Affordable Energy and American Jobs

In recent years, the Democratic Party has grown increasingly extreme in its opposition to affordable energy and the jobs and opportunity it creates for working and middle class American families.

Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton made headlines in opposing the Keystone XL pipeline, a common-sense project which would have created jobs, lowered energy prices, and bolstered North American energy security by replacing Middle Eastern oil with supplies from our Canadian allies.

Not to be outdone, self-described “Democratic Socialist” Bernie Sanders – currently in second place for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination – said this during a gathering of Democrats in South Carolina, as reported by The Hill:

“To hell with the fossil fuel industry. Worry more about your children and your grandchildren than your campaign contributions.”

Bernie Sanders is dead wrong. American energy is about jobs.

Sanders’ extreme positions epitomize the increasingly ideological views of Democratic partisans who have grown ever-further out of touch with mainstream American priorities.

In Sanders’ America, the 17.6 million jobs supported by manufacturing and the $2 trillion they contribute to the economy take second priority to his extreme ideological agenda.

Sanders says to hell with over ten million jobs supported by American natural gas, oil, and coal, as well as the competitive advantage low energy prices give to American workers compared to their counterparts in nations with higher energy costs.

Sanders says to hell with every family facing higher utility costs squeezing family budgets as wage growth has lagged under President Obama.

Sanders says to hell with the facts, to hell with the truth, and to hell with American families.

Sanders is not alone in putting his left-wing ideology ahead of facts and American families.

Fellow anti-energy Democrat Hillary Clinton’s opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline also stands in opposition to the priorities of Americans. The public supports the project by a margin of 3-to-1, with 85% believing the project would create jobs, according to one poll by WaPo/ABC News.

Public support for the project would undoubtedly be higher were it not for an extensive campaign by extreme anti-energy Democrats to mislead Americans on the benefits of the project. Pipelines improve public safety and protect the environment by reducing reliance on more accident-prone means of transport such as rail. According to government statistics analyzed by the Fraser Institute, pipelines are 4.5 times safer than rail for transporting oil.

Americans will face a clear choice when they vote for president in 2016.

The extreme vision of Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and fellow Democrats cripples energy production, threatens tens of millions of jobs, and increases energy bills for American families.

By contrast, Republicans have offered a different vision: one of bold job creation, economic growth, and international competitiveness in manufacturing by unleashing an energy renaissance capable of attaining North American energy independence within a matter of years.

The choice is clear: voters must commit to a bold vision of economic growth, for growth is the only escape from long-term debts, deficits, and financial challenges.

That commitment to growth must include a commitment to energy development.

One example of our opportunity lies in the continued development of the unconventional oil and gas resources, which are lowering energy costs and helping manufacturers remain competitive.

A 2015 study for the National Bureau of Economic Research conducted by professors from Dartmouth College found significant job creation and economic benefits associated with the development of these resources, concluding that every $1 million in oil and gas extracted creates $243,000 in wages and $117,000 in royalty revenues within 100 miles of the well.

Energy development is driving the creation of good-paying jobs. Six figure incomes accrue to rig hands in North Dakota and to welders in Texas. In some towns, unemployment has been driven so low that McDonald’s pays signing bonuses.

None of that matters to Sanders and his fellow anti-energy Democrats.

Meanwhile, families reap the benefits of low energy costs – but only where political leaders work to keep costs low.

Under failed anti-energy policies, families in Democratic-led states such as California and New York pay nearly 70% more per kilowatt-hour of electricity than families in Virginia, where Republican leadership has held these energy bills well below the national average.
