‘Tis the rumor… from the inestimable Terrence Boulden over at Virginia Virtucon:
Well we all know Ed G is going for the mansion, but a name that no one has mentioned has been whispered in my ear. State Senator Tom Garrett is said to be contemplating the move up.. I will keep you posted.
Yes, Virginia — Bearing Drift is pleased to confirm that Garrett has indeed been approached and is considering his options.
That is a fascinating name to have thrown out there, as Garrett is a known conservative and a Tea Party favorite — and perhaps a stronger candidate than Shak Hill was against Gillespie moving forward.
Other names? Rep. Rob Wittman does not appear to be winding down a potential run. Ken Cuccinelli’s name has been whispered, though most believe he will be running for U.S. Senate in 2018. Rep. Dave Brat’s name gets mentioned quite a bit in a troika of candidates that includes Shak Hill for LG and Jackson for AG.
…then there is Pete Snyder, whose 2013 LG run turned heads and ability to cross the conservative-populist divide remains enviable.
Still, Gillespie remains the frontrunner… but the speculation warms the soul, if comparisons to the unwanted position of U.S. House Speaker is any indicator.
