Boehner Back As Speaker; Lobbying Paul Ryan To Run

boehner_600pxBoehner flushed all the rats out at once, didn’t he?

FOX News is reporting that Boehner is indeed staying on as Speaker of the House:

Speaker John Boehner has agreed to stay on as Speaker–not just until the Caucus nominates someone –but, until that person can confirm 218 votes on the House floor (needed to take the Speaker’s gavel).  Short of that – Boehner will stay on for the rest of this Congress and steer legislation that is pending.

What does this mean?   Moderates and leadership types are cheering and saying Boehner is the only one they will support.   Conservatives will go ballistic since they know this signals that Boehner will make ALL kinds of deals to get big ticket legislation through the House even if it means using Democrats votes to do it.

Jim Geraghty over at National Review has more:

Conservative House Republicans who were fed up with Boehner, opposed Kevin McCarthy, and hadn’t yet unified around an alternative… have now set up circumstances where Boehner is now sticking around until further notice.

Will everyone who took credit for driving out Boehner now take it back?

…and from the Speaker’s Office:

After Leader McCarthy’s announcement, members of the House Republican Conference will not vote today for a new Speaker.  As I have said previously, I will serve as Speaker until the House votes to elect a new Speaker.  We will announce the date for this election at a later date, and I’m confident we will elect a new Speaker in the coming weeks.  Our conference will work together to ensure we have the strongest team possible as we continue to focus on the American people’s priorities.”

Reports on Twitter are confirming that Speaker Boehner’s office is lobbying Paul Ryan to step up and run.  Ryan had chosen not to do this under the current circumstances, but with time and organization?  Who knows…

All this having been said, Boehner — if this was planned out — just performed one of the more masterful orchestrations of statecraft in the history of modern American politics.  Announce you’re gone, watch as the rats come out of the ship, then re-captain the boat.

Makes all the pretenders to the Speaker’s office look rather weak… or at least, it puts those who pushed them forward in a particularly opportunistic light.  Boehner will now have an incredibly free hand at pushing through a series of legislative priorities before the 2016 elections — now with the threat of resignation no longer being a “what if” but an actual atom bomb waiting to go off.

Well played, Mr. Speaker.  Well played.
