Jordan: Virginia Democrats Diversity Hypocrisy

quarni_600pxIt is commonly stated that the Democratic Party of Virginia cares more about ethnic diversity and the well-being of minority communities in our state. This belief is key to their “Get Out The Vote” strategy, but many Virginia minorities are starting to realize that their Party actually takes their community for granted.

In case you missed it, a Washington Post column, published yesterday, by a northern Virginia Democrat ethnic minority totally blasted his party for diversity hypocrisy. He directly slammed Democrats for taking minorities for granted and not supporting him because of his ethnicity and Muslim faith. He criticized Democrats for not supporting minority candidates and indirectly pointed out that the Democratic “establishment” only supports minorities in minority districts, not in districts they consider competitive or top-tier.

Atif Qarni wrote about his Prince William County state senate primary race against Jeremy McPike and said, “I was shocked by the party establishment’s response to my [campaign] announcement in 2015.”

Qarni continued,”Virginia Democrats claim to fight for ethics reform, represent working-class people and lead a big-tent party, yet they groom and recruit mostly white, Christian, male candidates. A party that prides itself on being inclusive can be very exclusive.”

Qarni’s column further supports the message of a Washington Post story on last summer’s Primary elections that pointed out that the “Democratic candidates nominated in competitive races… were entirely white and male.”

The June story also highlighted the Democrat’s hypocrisy and growing angst in minority communities. Del. Mark Keam (D-Fairfax) said, “I’m a little bit frustrated that our party doesn’t think about, to the extent that’s possible, if we have two or three candidates that are strong and equally qualified, think about diversity.

The story also reads, “Minority communities have long felt taken for granted by a party that overwhelmingly wins the support of blacks, Latinos and Asians year after year. For some, party leaders’ preference for McPike exacerbated those feelings.”

Qarni’s column points to Prince William County Democrats’ concerns regarding his Muslim religion and Arab background. Interestingly enough…. it is the Republican Party of Virginia that has elected an Arab-American in the General Assembly (David Ramadan), and the first Muslim-American to run for office in Prince William County was a Republican (Faisal Gill), not a Democrat.

And don’t forget about Virginia’s recent federal and statewide elections. It was Virginia Republicans that nominated more minority and female candidates in the 2013 and 2014 statewide and congressional races.

I applaud Atif Qarni’s courage for saying what many minorities have said quietly for years. Thankfully, Virginians are starting to come to the realization that the Democratic Party takes minorities for granted.
