Before too long, someone is going to ask Donald Trump the billion dollar question: “Where do you stand on ethanol subsidies?”
His base — the “get government out of my Medicaid” crowd who doesn’t have much taste for immigrants (legal or otherwise) — is bloodthirsty for the right answer: no subsidies, no equivocation, no apologies.
Farmers in Iowa might want to have a little chat with The Don about such a position, in which case those pluralities look a bit more thin.
Of course, one doubts the debates next week will produced any substance from Trump, on this or many other issues:
* Trump’s volte face on life;
* Planned Parenthood executives’ support of anti-immigrant groups like Numbers USA, FAIR, and CIS;
* Trump’s stated support for a single-payer health care system…
…and that’s just for starters.
Trump has already dodged the question as to what he intends to do with the 11 million undocumented immigrants that are already in the United States once he makes Mexico pay for the closed borders, though precisely how he intends to make Mexico pay for this magic fence and what Canada is going to think about that is a different matter — no plans for expired visas through America’s airports, either.
Such a lack of depth should surprise no one. This is a candidacy so vapid that Trump doesn’t even list his issues or his stances. It is almost as if someone set a six-pack of warm beer next to Archie Bunker and let ‘er rip.
At some point though, the man needs to be nailed down. What do you believe, why do you believe it, and how will you implement it?
Clear and constructive policy will be Trump’s undoing at the end of the day, starting with a clear answer on ethanol subsidies in Iowa. For or against, Mr. Trump?
