I was hoping Democrats would eventually transition from telling everyone else to stop associations with the Confederacy and practice what they’ve preached. They’ve applauded everything from confederate flag bans on license plates to repainting cars from the Dukes of Hazzard.
But every Spring, the Democrats don’t mind honoring two slave owners in their annual Jefferson-Jackson fundraiser. In fact, not a mention was made of the insensitivity of the fundraiser’s title, even though the Charleston shooting happened a mere 9 days prior.
While Democrats were standing on their moral high horse, campaigning against the confederate flag:
They felt no remorse in raising megabucks for the Democrat Party through honoring slaveholders. (The candidate’s twitter account has no criticism of the Jefferson-Jackson event name.)
Hillary Clinton, after attending the funeral of the slain South Carolina pastor, gave the keynote speech at Virginia’s Jefferson Jackson dinner and said the fight to improve race relations isn’t over.
Odd venue for that comment, don’t you think?
The Connecticut Democrats have dumped the “Jefferson-Jackson” Dinner from their lexicon. It will be renamed, after calls by the NAACP to do so.
“Democrats cited Jefferson and Jackson’s ownership of slaves as a key factor in the decision, as well as Jackson’s role in the removal of Native Americans from the southeastern U.S. in what was known as the Trail of Tears.”
And they didn’t just own some slaves. They owned hundreds. And year after year, the Democrats have honored them by naming their biggest fundraising event for them.
For some reason, no Virginia Democrats saw even a hint of hypocrisy in their crusades against the Confederate flag, statues of Confederate soldiers and the like while honoring slavery in their biggest fundraiser of the year.
Bearing Drift calls on the Democrats to at least be consistent, and while they call for bans on all things Confederate, they practice what they preach, end the hypocrisy, and rename their slaveowners-honoring fundraiser.
And maybe an explanation why the thought to change themselves never occurred to them as they criticized everyone else.
