McAuliffe Finds His Whipping Boy

whipping_boyPoor ol’ Terry McAuliffe.  Virginia’s economy is cratering, 12th in the nation, ineffective government…

…but hey, state government is overtaxing its taxpayers turning a profit running a surplus:

“When I became governor I inherited about a $2.4 billion deficit. I will be announcing Monday we are going to be having a very significant surplus … [this will be] good news for the folks who live in the commonwealth of Virginia. We are moving forward,” said McAuliffe, the first-ever governor to address MWCOG.

Last month, Ric Brown, Virginia’s finance secretary, suggested a revenue surplus of as much as $427 million, according to the Roanoke Times. The state’s fiscal year closed June 30.

Of course, that “deficit” was on paper… truth was, McDonnell left behind a surplus.  Goes to show the strength of good processes left behind.

More to the point, is there anything lower that this sort of behavior?  Sweep in, kick the trash can over, blame your predecessor… then clean up your mess and proclaim victory?  What utter garbage.

Meanwhile, Virginia’s business ranking is cratering, nothing of merit has been accomplished by this part-time governor, most of the investment and activity is being done either by others or are the fruits of seeds planted by McDonnell and Bolling, and McAuliffe is desperately campaigning for 2016 — and good process and good government go by the wayside.

McAuliffe will point towards sequestration and the “deficit” left by his predecessor as the reason for Virginia’s economic woes, a convenient whipping boy if there ever was one.

Facts are, paper deficits and a quick veneer of new paint won’t resolve the very serious problems Virginia is facing economically.  While McAuliffe rightly takes a regional tone in presenting Virginia’s face to the nation and the world, the lack of emphasis on workforce development, post-secondary education, vocational training, infrastructure, capital investment, and the entire machinery of economic prosperity is mind blowing.

One can’t help but point back to the utter lack of character though.  Virginia’s gubernatorial condition requires that successors back up their predecessors — it’s the genius of the one-term governor spot that prevents the sort of sharp partisanship we see at display with this governor.

Good governors and honest statesmen rise above and layer their successes on top of the successes of previous years… McAuliffe is astute enough to know this (or ought to be), so the assignment here of blame — sequestration, prior administrations, the General Assembly, anyone but His Excellency — is either an oversight or a tremendous failure of character.

To be more pointed, it’s a rookie mistake.

Meanwhile, the rest of us get to scratch our heads about why Virginia taxpayers have to tighten our belts with 0.0% GDP growth while our state government and governor put on suspenders.  Odd how that works, isn’t it?
