For far too long, economic conservatives have focused on how government redistributes income downward, without taking a good hard look at how it redistributes income upward.
A classic example of this is the now-blessedly-defunct Northeast Dairy Compact, an agreement between the New England states and the Federal government to keep milk prices artificially high in New England for the sake of dairy farmers. It bit the dust in 2001, but it is only one of the numerous and idiotic agricultural policies that Rob Bluey blasted two years ago, policies that raise the cost of living for average Americans and redistribute income from the poorest urban dwellers to to wealthiest farmers.
So why am I bringing it up now? In part, because one of the NDC champions, then-Congressman Bernie Sanders (AP via Bangor Daily News) is now President-Candidate-for-the-downtrodden Bernie Sanders.
I just hope Democrats remember that Sanders’ class war included a non-aggression pact with Pitchfork Corporatism.
