Hinkle: Brat’s Anti-Immigrant Demagoguery Is Officially Old

hinkle_bart_600pxSo why all the hubbub?  Why are perfectly reasonable human beings so concerned about Dave Brat’s remarks on immigrants?

The ever-inestimible Bart Hinkle over at the RTD offers a summation of where Brat goes wrong:

The 7th District representative went on to say that during floor debates some had suggested the willingness of immigrants to serve in the military showed a certain degree of patriotism. “I wanted to stand up and shout, I mean ISIS is willing to serve in our military as well.”

Honor-list law school graduates who’ve clerked for state supreme courts, religious psychopaths who’ve slit the throats of infidels — they’re pretty much the same, right? Eisenhower built roads. Hitler built roads. Eisenhower and Hitler were no different either, when you think about it.

Hinkle also uncovers this gem:

Second, we are now hearing Republicans suggest the U.S. might need tighter limits on legal immigration. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker already has said so. And though Brat claims he has “never said I am against legal immigration,” he has said things that leave a distinctly different impression. In an interview last year, Brat told another radio host that skilled immigrants also should stay home: “The best thing for the home country is to end the political corruption there and so we shouldn’t take the very people, the high skilled Ph.D.s and masters out of the home country, they need to stay there, take care of the political corruption and dictators back home, so we can all trade and get rich together.”

The piece is worth reading in its entirety.  It’s one thing to uphold the law — we all agree on that.  It’s something else when the rhetoric and the ends are entirely aimed at keeping “those people” out of America.

Brat makes a big deal out of being an economist who “understands that a free and growing economy is necessary” for jobs and prosperity. But he has voiced doubts about the same fast-track trade authority every president since Roosevelt has had, and he wants to erect high barriers at the border to the free flow and exchange of labor.

…and that’s where the free market arguments start to come home to roost.

Brat is still a relative political neophyte, leaning hard on advisors who certainly have their opinions.  Yet when folks make the charge that Brat expresses clearly anti-immigrant views, it’s becoming more and more clear — in opposition book form — that Brat isn’t merely walking the tightrope, but doing gymnastics on the both immigrants and free market policies.

Of course, we’ve seen Brat come around on personhood in recent weeks.  Even PWC Chairman Corey Stewart came around on the “probable cause” ordinance that he now expresses deep regret for pushing forward.  It would take a heroic change of mind (and perhaps a change of advisers) to see Brat repudiate the more strident anti-immigrant line in favor of comprehensive immigration reform, but if one wanted to create a mind that would unite free market principles to the rule of law, one can’t come closer to the mark than Brat — if he chooses to lead rather than demagogue.

Perhaps we are watching a political metamorphosis?  Hope springs eternal…
