Thankful my mother gave me an “unfair advantage”

“If I could hear, my mother pray again, if I could hear, her tender voice as then. How glad I’d be, would mean so much to me, if I could hear my mother, pray again.”- Old Gospel Hymn “If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again”

I have a confession to make. I love Rush Limbaugh’s radio show. I know, I know, Rush is a little nuts. But sometimes he mentions things that you and I wouldn’t find usually. And Rush found a whopper of an article today.

A Social Justice Philosopher in Australia named Adam Swift has come up with a new way to divide society. His idea? Stop reading Bedtime Stories to children, because it gives them “too much of an advantage”. Also, parents who love their children give them too much of an advantage, so the family must be abolished.

No Im serious. It’s not even on Rush Limbaugh’s site. It’s on the Daily Telegraph

“Evidence shows that the difference between those who get bedtime stories and those who don’t — the difference in their life chances — is bigger than the difference between those who get elite private schooling and those that don’t,”

“I don’t think parents reading their children bedtime stories should constantly have in their minds the way that they are unfairly disadvantaging other people’s children, but I think they should have that thought occasionally,” he (Swift) said

And over at ABC.au:

Once he got thinking, Swift could see that the issue stretches well beyond the fact that some families can afford private schooling, nannies, tutors, and houses in good suburbs. Functional family interactions—from going to the cricket to reading bedtime stories—form a largely unseen but palpable fault line between families. The consequence is a gap in social mobility and equality that can last for generations.

‘One way philosophers might think about solving the social justice problem would be by simply abolishing the family. If the family is this source of unfairness in society then it looks plausible to think that if we abolished the family there would be a more level playing field.’

I cannot even make this stuff up.

It makes sad to see there are people on this Earth who are so upset over people reading to their children, they hope the government takes their children from them. Liberals believe that people are too weak, too unreliable, and too free to ever make the “fair” decision for their children. They preach about fairness, but not family. Families are the backbone of society and the Conservative Movement.

Family and Faith make up the family, but why do Liberals hate the family so much? Liberals hate the family because it teaches people morality. It teaches people to believe in a work ethic. Family and Family structure, no matter if a traditional family or a family that is blended, teaches people morality and ethics. And Liberals cannot handle the fact that we can do so without the mighty hand of government. We can operate without them, so therefore they oppose the family.

So after I read, and processed, and thought it out, I remembered that Sunday is Mother’s Day. And I want to say thank you to someone who, in Dr. Swift’s mind, gave me an “unfair advantage.”

My Mother, God Love Her, read to me all the time. Apparently, I was read to in the womb. I have been read to all my life by this woman. She read ever story known to man to me, and then taught me to read at an extremely young age. I from there began to read on my own. “Shush! We Are Writing the Constitution” and “Just a Few Words, Mr. Lincoln” were my favorites. We read, and read and read. I now read too much, and I spend a little too much money putting new books on my Kindle. And I blame all of my excessive reading on my Mother.

And did it give me an unfair advantage? Maybe, but I am happy she did. If it was not for her passing on her love of reading, I wouldn’t so well in school.  I would have never went to college to study Political Science and Government. I wouldn’t have the job I do. I wouldn’t live where I do. I wouldn’t have the amazing wife that I have. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my mom.

So a friendly word of advice to my fellow Conservatives, give your kids an “unfair advantage.” Read to them, read with them. Take the time to be involved in their lives. Because if it wasn’t for my Mother, I would have never went farther than the Carroll County line. I’m thankful for a Mom that gave me the “unfair advantage” in instilling in me a work ethic and a passion for making the world a better place. I’m thankful that my “unfair advantage” of a Mother taught me the love of Christ, and how with God all things are possible. I’m thankful for an “unfair advantage” and I hope that in the future I can pass that “unfair advantage” down to my children.

Thank you to all the Moms and Dads (grandparents, uncles, aunts, etc.)out there who care and give their kids
“unfair advantages!”
