Someone must’ve gotten fired. Someone’s on vacation.
The Pilot’s editorials this week have been really, really good.
Not that I agreed with all of them, but that’s not the point. They made defensible points and really argued them at a high level.
Maybe it’s all a dream.
The Pilot made a fair criticism of Dominion Virginia Power for wanting the protections of a state law three months before the law takes effect.
Gas prices dropped, so the new gas tax revenue (calculated as a percentage) dropped, too. For years people complained about a “cents per gallon” tax, so Virginia did a percentage and got caught when gas prices fell. The Pilot’s pointing this out was well argued even though it had to follow the Luzzatto Law of complaining about the tolls Don has to pay to get to work. Still, a good editorial.
Then the Pilot really got on a roll, applauding the announcement of the new carrier being homeported here, but pointing out the long term risk of over-reliance on military spending choices.
It was the fourth amendment versus police stingray towers that monitor calls, texts and emails (look out, Hillary) in a Pilot editorial that rightly questioned where the digital world fits in the security against unreasonable searches and seizures. Great writing.
And today’s calling for the entire Norfolk School Board to step down immediately is a bold but needed change as we wait for the recently-approved school board elections to be held. Norfolk Schools are a train wreck, and seeing the Pilot face this dire situation with bravado is what editorial writing is all about.
If the Pilot stays this reasoned and, shall we say, not lockstep leftist, perhaps more readers and leaders will consider their suggestions. I hope the roll continues.
