The Pictures

By Robert Warren

I remember the pictures. I was about ten and there was this book. My friends and I just looked – at the emaciated men and women, the mass graves, the showers and ovens. The names were foreign – Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Dachau and more. But as a kid, I had no experience upon which to judge the horror. My friends and I went back to playing cops and robbers with our cap pistols.

As a young man, I began to understand the meaning of genocide. Of course I read about the genocide of the Nazis, but also of the Stalinist Holodomor and the Maoists “Great Leap Forward”. Amongst these three genocides well over 100 million people, maybe 150 million, were slaughtered in the name of socialism and communism.

As I write this, I see the same patterns of genocide emerging. Before me is a world trying to appease tyranny while, at the same time, recoiling in horror. Oh the names have changed and, to some extent the tactics, but make no mistake, genocidal tyranny is on the march once again and it will have to be stopped at a great cost in lives and treasure. Of course some will debate the numbers, but in a war for basic survival the numbers are necessarily large.

The generation that fought World War II is rapidly disappearing from the earth. Those still alive are repositories of wisdom that will soon be lost. Others have written books that languish on the history shelves of libraries. Probably the best records are the films of the death and destruction of all out war. Unfortunately, far too many of our young people are being deprived of these lessons under the assumption that these records of war are far too horrific and too politically incorrect.

The victims of past genocides scream “Not again! “Dear God not again!” But as the philosopher, George Santayana, once said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. Not in the same exact way, of course, but repeat it they will. And the lessons of past generations will not be kind.

There is no more time to play with silly and stupid arguments. It is time to get serious before untold amounts of blood flow in the streets of America. It is time to call this genocidal and evil Islamic tyranny by its name.
