We interrupt the Election 2015 coverage with a quick review of a Warren push-poll for 2016.
Much of the focus for next year’s presidential election has been on the likely Republican melee, based on the assumption that almost nothing can stop Hillary Clinton from the Democrats’ nomination. Well, this morning, none other than Moveon.org (which was initially formed in support of Hillary’s husband during the L’affaire Lewinsky – oh, the irony) made it clear what “almost” means.
Moveon and Democracy for America commissioned YouGov (better known for their British polling) to conduct a push poll for Senator Elizabeth Warren. Paul Bedard (Washington Examiner) reported the results:
The poll of 400 conducted Jan. 30 to Feb. 5 put Warren ahead of Clinton in Iowa, 31 percent to 24 percent. In New Hampshire, her lead is 30 percent to 27 percent.
Now, the sponsors make it very clear this was a push poll; the key question isn’t even asked until “respondents hear about Warren’s positions and biography, without any negative information provided about other candidates” (same link). So don’t reach for the Warren-Insert-running-mate-here buttons just yet. I’m particularly curious to see what would happen to these numbers after these Democrats in Iowa and New Hampshire hear about the Fake Native American label and how Warren’s antipathy for “Wall Street CEOs” doesn’t extend to the ones getting sweetheart loans from the Export-Import Bank. This might have something to do with Warren’s own insistence that she is not running for President.
That said, the poll does reveal that, as much as she did in 2008, Hillary Clinton enters 2016 with intra-party support a mile wide…and an inch deep.
Odds are, the GOP nomination battle won’t be the only one with some drama next year.
