Tough Calls

Sports

“The Call” – Big controversy out of the NFC semifinal game at Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field – that is until you see Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant not actually catch the ball because, as the video replay clearly shows, the ball hit the aforementioned Tundra. When the ball hits the ground – as is seen in at least one play in EVERY NFL and NCAA televised game – it’s an incomplete pass. Not a tough call.

What’s also not a tough call is the realization that Peyton Manning probably played in his last NFL game losing to his old team the Indianapolis Colts.

Dark Pools

Front page just below the fold in today’s Wall Street Journal – I’d link it but there is a paywall – is this happy headline :

“Nasdaq Looks to Operate Dark Pools for Banks”

I read the article and it aligns with the headline quite nicely. I give the article an “R” for potential negative economic consequences. The article describes how banks are trying to find profits in a post Dodd-Frank regulatory structure that is, apparently, far more expensive than before. WSJ reporter Bradley Hope also notes technology costs as a motivating force in this move.

That’s what you get when you combine more government imposed cost burdens with the normal cost burdens imposed by the market – some very dangerous, non-transparent decisions.

I wouldn’t swim in “dark pools” – they sound deep and without edges.

Golden Globe Awards

It’s Hollywood award season. Again.

Oh. Thank. God.

We watched Downton Abbey instead.

George Clooney was given a lifetime achievement award – the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Apparently, his movie “The Monuments Men” was not seen in Hollywood either. Awful movie about great story that became another homage to Clooney Caring instead of the real story in the much better book. Amazon will have it to you by week-end. I gave a copy to my dad for Christmas.

Nice to see a movie that I went to get an award – Best Picture Comedy or Musical – “The Grand Budapest Hotel” – it really is a fun movie. Critics call it “whimsical” and “quirky”. It is. And I recommend it.

Kevin Spacey won Best Actor in a TV Drama Series. Why? Frank Underwood that’s why.

That a Netflix drama series is winning awards is one thing; but it is kicking bee hind in the market.

Like the Dez Bryant non catch – that’s not a tough call.

Companies like Netflix don’t need Dark Pools in order to find success, they have talent, vision, and execution – and not too much in the way of regulation.

Net Neutrality notwithstanding.

Rules. They can be such a problem.

Without them, the Dallas Cowboys might have won, banks could be running amok, and Frank Underwood would be…nah, he’d still be Frank Underwood.

Tough calls? Perhaps.

But someone has to make them.
