In his first interview with Bearing Drift since his re-election, Rep. Scott Rigell discusses the campaign, his concerns with Senator Kaine’s position on Keystone XL (this was recorded just before the Senate vote that failed to break the filibuster), his concerns with the president’s threats of unilateral executive action on immigration (recorded before it was announced that the president is expected take unilateral action Thursday), the ability (or inability) to get Washington to work and his efforts to change that, repealing sequestration and passing the next National Defense Authorization Act, reforming mandatory spending and getting “our fiscal house in order,” and the turmoil in the Middle East and its impacts here at home.
Rigell does an excellent job of tying everything together in his comments on energy security and its importance both economically and to our national security. In the 2nd District, it’s all about defense, the port, tourism, and, what Rigell calls the fourth leg, domestic energy production.
When speaking about the president’s expected immigration policy, an impassioned Rigell declared, “The president is unwisely – recklessly – taking us into a Constitutional crisis.”
Bottom-line: The next congress has about a year to be effective before the whole election cycle kicks in again – this time in a presidential cycle.
