Ed Gillespie’s Character

By Paul Logan, Communications Director, Gillespie for Senate

I wanted to share a story from last week that speaks to Ed Gillespie’s character and helps explain why despite being outspent more than 2:1, when few in the media believed that we had a chance, he was able to build a grassroots movement that very nearly overtook Mark Warner.

As the local canvass of votes began after election night, we were separated by less than a percentage point, with Mark Warner held under 50 percent of the vote. Staff and volunteers around the state who had been working nonstop in the lead up to election mobilized again and stepped up to work at all of the local canvass locations as the process to get an official tally played out.

As the numbers came in through the week, it became clear that we weren’t going to have the votes to overtake Senator Warner, and that a recount would not change the result.

I proposed putting out an advisory to the press late Thursday to let them know we would be making an announcement Friday. Ed said no.

He called the staff from around the Commonwealth to the Lorton office for a dinner with him and Cathy. He shared his decision and thanked them all for their hard work.

That night, he sent a message to several hundred “G-Force” volunteers around the state, asking them to join him on a conference call at 12:15 p.m. the following day and asked them not to share it with anyone else. Not one of them did.

We notified the media about the 1 p.m. press conference at 7 a.m. the following day.

Ed said, “When they see media reports tomorrow morning, I want them to know that they’re going to hear from me first.”

Ed called Senator Warner shortly before noon to congratulate him, wish him well and let him know that he would be conceding.

He spoke with the G-Force at 12:15 p.m. and thanked them for their tireless work, for keeping the faith and believing in the campaign when polls, pundits and prognosticators were all saying we didn’t have a chance. He asked them not to Tweet or share the announcement until he made it public at 1 p.m. Not one of them did.

When Ed and Cathy walked out into the ballroom in Springfield to make the announcement, they were greeted with applause from more than 100 supporters who with nearly no notice and during a work day, wanted to be there to support them.

There are some cynical people involved in politics. Ed is not one of them.

Ed and Cathy Gillespie understand that people are at the center of a successful campaign effort and they treated their staff and volunteers like family. It’s really hard to come up short, but there’s no one on the campaign or in the G-Force hanging their head today.

We’re all proud to have worked for as fine a man as Ed Gillespie.

In Ed’s book, he wrote about the importance of loyalty and the bonds you build on a campaign. “In politics, you don’t change bosses, you accumulate them.”

I’m a McDonnell guy. I’m an Obenshain guy. And along with all of the men and women who had the honor to be involved in this campaign, I’m proud to be a Gillespie guy.
