McClellan on Medicaid, Warner underpays women, Redskins and macaca, Democrats vote this weekend in 48th, Happy Independence Day!

Quote of the Day: “Maybe he’s playing 3D chess, like in Star Trek…or maybe he’s full of shit.” – Unnamed liberal on why the Washington Redskins hired Ben Tribbett, a PR consultant – and the liberal blogger who brought us “macaca” – to help defend their nickname

Jenn McLellan defends Medicaid Expansion
Del. Jenn McLellan took to Facebook to advocate for Medicaid expansion.  In her post, she cites a White House Council of Economic Advisers report that says Virginia’s benefits of expansion could be:

“210,000 people could get insurance covereage [sic] in 2016
“13,300 jobs would be addedd [sic] betwee [sic] 2014 through 2017”

Um, hasn’t the talking point been all along about how there are “400,000 people” in this so-called “coverage gap”?  You’re about 45% short of your goal, Del. McClellan.  Also, a whopping 400 jobs per month? How does that balance with the number that will be lost from higher taxes once the state has to pay for Medicaid on its own?

Mark Warner – Cheapskate on Women’s Salary
From the Washington Free Beacon:

“A Free Beacon analysis of Democratic Senate offices earlier this year found that female staffers paid just 91 cents for each dollar paid to male staffers. The average salary for a woman was more than $5,500 below the average salary for a man.

“Sen. Mark Warner (D., Va.) paid his female staffers only 72 cents on the dollar compared to male staffers, less than the 77 cents on the dollar trope used by Democrats.”

Just a data point to consider the next time a Democrat starts whining about equal pay, equal rights, or a “war on women.”

Tribbett as Redskins PR rehabilitator is just “weird”
Ben Tribbett is a good liberal.  He’s a good strategist.  He knows how to do his day job: PR and political consulting.  He also can be reckless, ruthless, and devious.

For more than nine years Tribbett ran the website “Not Larry Sabato,” with his biggest story being about former US Senator George Allen’s comments on a warm August day in western Virginia to his video tracker.  The “macaca” incident, to Tribbett, instantly became a racial slur and he added as much fuel to the story as he possibly could, to attack Allen.

And who is George Allen?  In addition to being a former representative, senator, and governor – you can’t go an interview without talking football and his beloved Washington Redskins, which his namesake dad coached and his brother, Bruce, is general manager.

Buzzfeed profiles the very odd hire and sums it up quite nicely:

“Eight years ago, one of Virginia’s most prominent liberal bloggers convinced America ‘macaca’ was racist. Now he’s in charge of convincing America ‘Redskins’ isn’t.”

So, as a gift to Ben, Bearing Drift would like to present an alternative naming of the Washington Redskins,  complete with logo:

"Hail to the Macacas?"

Seven Democrats seek nomination in the 48th
It looks like Democrats will have plenty of choices in their caucus Sunday to replace the resigning Del. Bob Brink in the 48th District.  From the cursory synopsis offered by the Washington Post, each candidate will be a loyal voice for liberalism.  The GOP has until Monday, 5 pm, to field a candidate.

Happy Independence Day!
As much as I like to bemoan the amount of government intervention in our lives, we still have a tremendous amount of freedom and prosperity.  So, I, like most of you, am still looking forward to celebrating our Independence this weekend.  But I do have one request, when you speak with people or connect on social media, wish them a Happy “Independence” Day!  Make the day and its celebrations have meaning.  And, as a refresher:

The Declaration of Independence
