The empty chair debatePolitics

geico_pig_weePonderous question of the day…

Should Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who is Jewish, attend a debate, on the Jewish Sabbath, at a place called “Honey Baked Ham” against an intramural opponent who can barely raise enough money to pay his consultants? Or should he allow his opponent to have his so-called “empty chair” debate, fully-furnished, complete with echo chamber?

Discuss.

  • George

Who scheduled a debate then and there?

    • http://redstate.com/ midwestconservative

Probably some idiot who wanted to embarrass Cantor by forcing an “empty chair” debate.

Cantor should go ahead and show up, or at least offer to show up if they change the time and place. Debate Brat into the Ground and then walk away.
Cuccinelli certainly didn’t gain anything by not debating Sarvis, and while I don’t think Cantor stands any chance of losing, not showing up gives another whine/complaint from the backbiters in his district.

May we live long enough to see Cantor debate. His ads have already been found outrageously deceitful by every independent journalist who’s looked at them. Calling a free market economist a “liberal”?!? That only explains the fact that Cantor, himself, is a Keynesian — which makes him the liberal. But his establishment ilk called free market economics ‘voodoo economics’ when Ronald Reagan ran in 1980. It’s simple facts like this which explain why the low-life, gutless, big-government, stimulus Keynesian won’t debate the free market conservative in the race. He wouldn’t debate if Dave Brat offered to show up in Cantor’s driveway. He can’t. What’s Cantor got? Amnesty? A $17+ trillion debt (and growing)? A well funded PAC that’s declared war on the Tea Parties and grassroots conservatives while Cantor still calls himself a conservative? What a phony.

        • MD Russ

Ah-ha. Here is wisdom. Cantor is being opposed because he doesn’t pander to the Tea Party and the other astroturf BS artists. He is, of all things, an “establishment” Republican. (Well, he is the House Majority Leader.) Oh, the humanity!

          • BastilleDay, 2112

Cantor is being opposed because he doesn’t pander to the CITIZENS he was supposed to represent. Here’s a quarter, buy yourself a CLUE!!

          • MD Russ

A plugged nickel would buy me all I need to know about the Tea Party. Keep the change.

      • P_Henry_Saddleburr

But he won’t. Cantor is a pussy. Trust me. I live in his district. I’ve been around him. He’s a phony.

        • Tyler Craddock

Yeah, we should trust a pseudonym. Who’s the phony?

          • P_Henry_Saddleburr

It’s unwise to use your real name if you work for a company full of liberals. Did you ever Google search Tyler Craddock?

          • Tyler Craddock

            And your point is?

          • http://www.brianschoeneman.org/ Brian W. Schoeneman

            Guilt by association is dumb.

          • Tyler Craddock

Brian — I really was not sure what the comment meant. Wasn’t sure if this person was referring to their workplace or mine. I thought it was their’s as I do not “work for a company full of liberals.”

          • http://www.brianschoeneman.org/ Brian W. Schoeneman

Even if you worked surrounded by liberals, assuming you are one because of your job is dumb.

I get this daily, and it gets tiresome.

And I give anybody credit willing to use their real name. That takes courage.

          • Peter Greenly

Dave Brat worked for Tim Kaine and donated to Walter Stosch after he voted for the Warner tax hike. So, yeah, let’s play guilt by association…

  • Joe Nowlin

The Sabbath and ham have nothing to do with Cantor’s refusal to debate the intellectual conservative Dr. Dave Brat. On a side note I have been to the annual big Cantor breakfast in RVA and they served pork bacon and sausage at all the tables.

  • http://virginiaconservative.net/ Joshua Huffman

Cantor ought to debate Brat, no question. However, I think it would have been better to select a different time and place.

    • Turbocohen

I agree. Lets set up a debate at the meeting hall of his Synagogue.

      • MD Russ

        Racist comment.

        • Turbocohen

Which race are you referring to?

          • http://www.southsidecentral.com/ Bruce Hedrick

In your case of your comment, the human race should be offended.

  • Curt Diemer

It’s not the pork products or Sabbath that Eric fears. It’s his inability to debate or even speak well without notes or a teleprompter. He has taken years of speech coaching but no amount can give him what he is really lacking. A core. With no core, thinking on your feet becomes problematc.

  • Tyler Craddock

No harm intended, but I fail to see why it is Eric’s duty to give his opponent a platform.

    • P_Henry_Saddleburr

So you’re cool with Eric running to the tall grass again, just like he has against BHO? It may not be his ‘duty’, but it’s curious why Cantor doesn’t do town halls anymore.

The man is a conniver and a liar, afraid of his own record and his own constituents.

Leave the religion out of it. That doesn’t matter to me.

Cantor is all about Cantor. Period. He takes refuge with his inner circle and doesn’t wish to hear from his constituents and in a battle of wits against Dave Brat he’s an unarmed man.

      • Tyler Craddock

Well, if it is that clear cut, then the venerable intelligent omnipotent Dr. (that is Dr., not mere Mr.) Brat should not need a debate to prove that he is clearly the the best candidate. Why do you need some staged debate to make that distinction? Should not the clearly superior Dr. Brat simply be able to lay out his credentials and folks will clearly see what you see?

        • P_Henry_Saddleburr

Nice job with the “venerable intelligent omnipotent” bull shit. I know Dave. He doesn’t go by “Doctor” in real life. That’s a Cantorism. Dave is an every man. Unlike the elitist, Eric Cantor.

A better set of questions would be, why would the House Majority Leader be so afraid of a grass roots conservative that he
          a) paints him falsely as a liberal
          and
          b) cower at the prospect of a debate?

I first met Eric Cantor in front of the west end Ukrops in the early 90s and I’ve supported him every two years for quite some time. I’ve stood shoulder to shoulder with him for years but,,,,

Now. He doesn’t deserve my support and will not get my support. He has become a Washington power broker and a self preservationist above all. And that he has mischaracterized Mister Brat so brazenly pretty much proves that.

The man shows more wrath and hate for movement conservatives than he does for Barack Hussein Obama.

Why should Cantor be above a debate? And why would mr. craddock refer to an open discussion of policy and ideas characterize this debate as “staged”?

          That’s very odd.

          • Tyler Craddock

Why does Professor Brat need Eric Cantor on stage to lay out his case as to why he should be the Congressman? That is what is very odd.

          • MD Russ

Tell us again what public office Dave Brat has been elected to and why he is more than Anybody-But-Cantor?

          • P_Henry_Saddleburr

Anybody-But-Cantor works for me. I know Dave. He’s a good man and I trust him. Cantor has inside the beltway disease. He didn’t always, but he has it really badly now.

          • MD Russ

So what you are saying is that we need term limits?

This jew would meet at Honey Baked Ham or Hymies Kosher Kitchen for that matter. WTF Eric, you can meet anywhere. Pick a location.

    • http://bearingdrift.com/ J.R. Hoeft

He doesn’t have to. If Brat actually got some traction in this race, then he might. Until then, it’s just a bunch of folks getting on social media instead of going door-to-door, phone banking, fundraising…you know, doing the things it actually takes to win an election.

      • Turbocohen

As much as it pains me, I agree.

      • stevenbrodietucker@gmail.com

Cantor doesn’t have an argument or a campaign. He’s just fighting for the rich guys in DC. So are you. Idiots. You really think the pimps in DC are going to make you rich? I love philosophy and chess, I’ve just never seen such poor chess players before. It’s like watching a losing army beg for their lives, promising anything, to their enemies, so long as they aren’t destroyed. Well, welcome to your destruction. You’re going down. Virginia is no longer interested in your breed. Whittman, Cantor, Goodlatte. You’re all going down. If you want a job in retail, I’d be happy to take your application, but I will not abide sales associates without integrity or work ethic. But I’m an equal opportunity employer. lol

  • David McKissack

I think Cantor should debate. He should prove he can make Brat wurst.

  • http://www.brianschoeneman.org/ Brian W. Schoeneman

I’m probably in the majority of people who would prefer that Cantor do his job and get some bills passed rather than wasting time having a show debate to make Brat and his supporters feel better. A debate between the two of them would be as enlightening as a bar stool argument between two hipsters over which beard grooming products produce a brighter sheen.

    • Patrick Murphy

I’d be a lot more interested in that hipster debate.

  • stevenbrodietucker@gmail.com

The reason why Eric Cantor won’t debate, is because Cantor would be forced to reveal just how liberal and radical he really is. His record speaks for itself. Massive increases in debt, support for amnesty, playing defense for Obama’s Bureaucracy. Eric Cantor isn’t a conservative. He isn’t even a Republican. He’s a left wing political operative for the Chamber of Commerce. Now, the big business boys in Richmond might like that just fine, but your average citizen who is suffering under Cantor’s leadership in the House of Represenatives are looking for a change.

    • Peter Greenly

      Huh.

Dave Brat served under Tim Kaine while he tried to hike taxes. Yet never did he speak out or take a principled stand.

Dave Brat served under Bob McDonnell as he hiked taxes. Yet never did he speak out or take a principled stand (Richard Rahn did – http://bearingdrift.com/2013/03/05/rahn-resigns-from-economic-advisory-board-over-transportation-tax-hike/)

Dave Brat worked for Walster Stosch as he backed the McDonnell tax hike and now Medicaid expansion. Yet never did he speak out or take a principled stand. Heck, he donated to Stosch’s 2007 campaign against a Tea Party challenger.

How on earth can we expect Dave Brat to stand up for our principles and against Obama in Washington if he hasn’t done it in the past?

      • stevenbrodietucker@gmail.com

Eric Cantor is an Obama Plant. No one is interested in his rebuttals. The Marxists and the Corporatists are going down. Linwood Cobb? Where’d he go? Welcome Gruber. lol Welcome to the new Republican Party. All you Corporatist thugs are going to have to beg the Democrats if you want to continue taking our tax dollars! lol

        • BastilleDay, 2112

Eric Cantor’s politics and strategies of DIRTY TRICKS along with the use of his “YOUNG GUNS Goon” ARMY demonstrates that he has more in common with Democrat than he has with REAL Republicans (like Mike Lee).

Well as an illegal immigrant that Brat is, he should be able to debate Cantor anywhere…I know I have the RINO’s (soft R’s, lol) hooked now. Who gives a crap honestly? I suspect Cantor is as Jewish as Pelosi is Catholic (google it). If we’re being really honest, Brat doesn’t stand a chance against multi-millionaire Cantor (in chamber of commerce donations parlance). So lets continue voting for the semi democrat platform in the republican party.

  • Matt G.

OH and why not call for a select committee on the IRS? Instead Cantor calls on the attorney general to appoint a special prosecutor for the IRS investigation (LOL, HAHA), when Holder is already in contempt. Do the right thing and demand another select committee with someone as equally qualified as Gowdy is on Benghazzi. Previously a judge, Goehmert is good for this…
