Former Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli made a little news when he announced he had created a law firm, along with Sen. Tom Garrett, that will represent gun owners. It has a unique pitch in that one can hire the firm on retainer for $8.33 per month.

And, because this is Ken Cuccinelli, and he’s putting his shoulder behind defending gun owners, the reaction from Democrats was rather predictable.
Del. Patrick Hope’s fears and outrage, however, were just getting started. Now the would-be congressman from Virginia’s 8th CD has decided to make Cuccinelli’s firm a campaign issue:
“I was absolutely appalled to see the news that former VA Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli founded a new law firm to specialize in defending people who commit crimes with guns. His website even highlighted George Zimmerman as the kind of defendant they could help and then removed the reference after it received attention. The firm is soliciting payments of around $10 a month as a retainer for free legal services should their client commit a crime with a gun.
At a minimum, this type of behavior is unethical for an attorney to be paid in anticipation of a crime- especially one with guns. I believe we can outlaw this in the U.S. Congress by passing a bill that would prohibit such arrangements in criminal cases.
Kudos to Mr. Cuccinelli for still having the ability to get under the rather thin skin of some Virginia pols.
And as for Mr. Hope…I can appreciate the need to gin-up an issue in a crowded congressional primary. That this particular issue combines two leftist bogeymen — Ken Cuccinelli and guns — might even make it a successful pitch with Democratic primary voters.
But the idea of passing a federal law to ban what Cuccinelli’s firm is doing? That’s just nuts. And authoritarian, creepy and fully in-line with what motivates some on the left today.
Then again…perhaps Hope is really trying to take on the role Jim Moran used to have in more than name only, and speak what other Democrats only think.
