Terry McAuliffe’s new political action committee, Common Good VA, is doing quite well for itself these days. And as its fortunes rise, so, too, do those of the Democratic party of Virginia, which has received at least two, $100,000 checks from the McAuliffe PAC.
Nothing out of the ordinary here, for Virginia. Just consider Dominion Resources, which is holding its own with McAuliffe and all comers when it comes to shuffling political money around.
My understanding is that His Excellency was quite displeased when Paul Goldman and I broke the story about his PAC’s price list.
That Mr. McAuliffe was so upset is understandable. But it also makes me wonder whether his denial about the price list (“They put out a piece of paper that I had never seen or approved…”) is true.
“They” would hardly put out anything related to fundraising that McAuliffe — the consummate fundraiser — would not have seen, approved or even created himself.
Let’s be charitable on this bright and beautiful Spring day and just say the Governor misspoke, mistakes were made, and so on.
Regardless of who approved what, Common Good VA is doing strong business and is likely to continue to do so for as long as McAuliffe is perceived to have something of value to offer in return. Perhaps not dinner with him and Mrs. McAuliffe, as in the original offer sheet. But something much more powerful, though intangible: relevance.
It’s a fickle commodity — just ask Bob McDonnell.
