A new poll released by the Citizens United Political Action Committee shows Fairfax Delegate Barbara Comstock with a commanding lead in the primary to replace retiring Congressman Frank Wolf. Comstock leads the pack with 44% of likely primary voters, with Delegate Bob Marshall (R-Prince William) in second place with 10%. No other contender broke 5%, and 30% of respondents remain undecided.
Citizens United PAC conducted the telephone poll of 402 self-described primary voters over last weekend, April 5-6. Comstock leads all of the other candidates in name recognition and favorability.
The poll also indicates that likely Republican primary voters list Obamacare as the #1 issue facing the district (39%) with the economy (28%) and government spending (27%) rounding out the top three.
Citizens United has endorsed Barbara Comstock’s candidacy.
The data reflects what has been the case since the start of this nomination fight – this race remains Barbara Comstock’s to lose. With both Bob Marshall and Howie Lind amping up attacks on Comstock in the last few days, this poll confirms her clear front runner status. Even if all of the undecided votes coalesced around an alternative candidate, Comstock would still win.
The Republican party canvass (also known as a firehouse primary) will be held April 26.
