Mark Herring Announces Virginia Voters Are Too Stupid to Know Better

In a deep profile piece on Democratic longshot for Attorney General, State Senator Mark Herring revealed his mistrust, distaste and flat out vitriol for Virginia voters today.

You may remember, Mark Herring has come out repeatedly against a number of positions that have been passed into Virginia law, including but not limited to:

– Virginia’s marriage constitutional amendment, passed by 57% of voters
– The recently passed Photo ID bill, supported by more than 75% of Virginians
– Right to work, supported by more than 60% of Virginians
– Solidifying property rights, passed by more than 75% of voters

Herring has repeatedly put him on the position of outside looking in when it comes to Virginia voters. This keeps his track record going of talking about issues that Virginians don’t care about, or aren’t focused on.

But, Herring is running for Attorney General, which entails defending Virginia law…right?

Apparently not.

“Whenever there is that kind of challenge or question about a law the General Assembly has passed, as to whether it is constitutional, what I would do is poll the attorneys in the attorney general’s office who have the expertise in the particular subject matter that is at issue,” Herring said.
I would review their legal analysis, the arguments, and make a thoughtful or deliberate decision whether or not I thought the law was constitutional or not.”

That’s right folks, Virginia voters and the General Assembly are too stupid to know if a law is constitutional, so Herring will be the end all be all for whether or not a law gets defended. Doesn’t matter what the General Assembly says. Doesn’t matter what the voters say. They don’t know any better, so we’ll leave ALL Virginia law up to a small group of lawyers in Richmond, then Mark Herring to decide whether or not they’ll be defended.

This is a giant red flag to Virginia.

If we elect an Attorney General who arbitrarily decides whether or not a law is constitutional, despite being overwhelming passed in the General Assembly (property rights, 35-5) or in Virginia statewide (property rights, 76%), what’s the point in passing laws? What’s the point in passing constitutional amendments by voters?

Mark Herring is declaring he knows better than you, than me, than the General Assembly, than all of Virginia.

The irony of it is, Mark Herring has the audacity to say he wants to remove politics from the Attorney General’s office. If you are the sole decider of what’s going to be law in Virginia, you are not only injecting politics into the office, you’re doing so in a massive way. Herring wants to put HIS agenda into the office, enacting his agenda, deciding what will and will not be defended, and in doing so will gut Virginia law, voters be damned.

If that doesn’t give Virginia voters pause, what will?
