Aside from the hurricane buzz surrounding the Republican convention in Tampa, there are fresh, new and exciting things to worry about: anarchists bent on disrupting both the Republican and Democratic conventions:
…the FBI’s information as of March showed that anarchist extremists proposed “engaging in potentially destructive criminal activities against critical infrastructure outside the security perimeter throughout the Tampa Bay region because they expected access to the main RNC venue to be tightly controlled.”
Yes, access is tightly controlled. So much so that only about 50,000 or so people will be allowed to wander through the green zone relatively unmolested. There’s likely greater danger facing fans at a Redskins game (beyond the wretched play on the field).
And there are other matters of concern. This morning’s email brought me a warning that the group Anonymous “has already announced its intent to protest against the RNC and promote its ‘Operation Cannabis’ campaign during the convention.” So I’ve been warned to take an online course in cyber security, lest my computer be used to turn Bearing Drift into a pot legalization site.
I’m not terribly worried about anarchists, Anonymous, or Occupiers — though the latter group does have a lovely collection of protest signs folks can print out and slap on a stick. I expect to see plenty of them around the group’s “Romneyville” digs. But remember, you can’t camp there unless you agree not to rape anyone.
If anything, it’s the protestors who seem to have more serious things to worry about than the convention-goers. Anarchists colliding with drug legalizers, mixing with Occupiers who can’t touch anyone or anything without consent…that powder keg will blow before they get to the rousing bits of “This Land Is Your Land.”
