Tim Kaine’s shadowy Silver Line friends

It was big news the other day when The Washington Post gleefully reported that Cuccinelli sides with … Kaine?

In a letter regarding the transfer of the Dulles Toll Road and oversight of the Dulles rail project to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Cuccinelli wrote:

The only court to consider this question concluded that the transfer of the Commonwealth’s interest pursuant to the MOU was permissible. Therefore, although there is no precedent from the Supreme Court of Virginia delineating the precise authority of the Governor in this context, the Governor’s actions were upheld in a court of law. (H/T Bacon’s Rebellion)

Let’s note that while the Attorney General did say it was legal, he didn’t say it was smart, and he certainly didn’t say it was frugal.

The Washington Free Beacon reported on May 17 that an audit found that MWAA’s 12-member Board of Directors, appointed by officials in Virginia, Maryland, and the District, operate outside of federal regulations, allowing them unlimited use of taxpayer-funded travel with limited accountability.

And who was the Chief of Limited Accountability? That’s right, a friend of Tim’s, Dennis L. Martire who among other things took a nine-day, expense paid trip to Sardinia, an Italian island playground for the rich. Apparently Martire needed 9 days for a 36-hour conference. Talk about your fuzzy math.

And that wasn’t his only trip, agency records show that Martire spent some $38,000 attending five “conferences” in 2010 and 2011 in important fact-finding places like Prague and Belgium. That’s an average of $7,600 per “conference.”

The Washington Post writes: Mr. Martire, who was appointed to the airports board by then-Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D), is not the only big spender on the airports board. Some other members, though not all, have indulged a taste for expensive wine, fancy meals and conferences in charming venues, all at the authority’s expense. Last year, under pressure, the board reluctantly shelved plans to spend $7.2 million on a three-story addition to its headquarters at National Airport and to double the size of its boardroom, along with adding a $350,000 multimedia system.

The Post describes Martire as “an official with the Laborers’ International Union of North America who has served on the airports authority board since 2009, has
treated the authority as a sort of high-end travel agency.”

So, it’s pretty laughable when Tim Kaine tries to attack George Allen on spending issues.

Kaine recently tweeted: The Parable of Talents in the Bible is the foundation for my strong belief in a talent economy and linked to this post on his blog.

I’m thinking maybe Tim needs to turn to a different scripture passage:

All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.~ 1 Corinthians 10:23 (NASB)

Oh, and while he’s at it, he should stop bearing false witness.
