Michelle Obama, Mitt Romney Address Virginia Graduates

Recently, Jim Hoeft reminded us that Virginia is, indeed, a battleground state (political junkies in the Commonwealth, rejoice!).  If anyone needs any proof that he is correct, one need look no further than the commencement exercises at two of Virginia’s largest universities:

Yesterday, First Lady Michelle Obama walked through the tunnel, touched the Hokie Stone and entered Lane Stadium to address a crowd of more than 35,000 at Virginia Tech’s spring commencement exercises.  She shared the stage with Sen. Mark Warner, who had been scheduled to address the graduates before the First Lady contacted the university.

In her address, the First Lady praised the resilience of the Hokie Nation and reminded graduates that no one can define you unless you let them:

“But you also know that in the end, people can only define you if you let them.  It’s up to each of us to invent our own future with the choices we make and the actions we take.

“We are all so proud of you.  We are all so inspired by you.”

Today, Gov. Mitt Romney will address the graduating class at Liberty University.  A crowd in excess of 30,000 is expected to attend today’s ceremony.  Gov. Romney’s address is a reminder that, for his campaign, carrying our Commonwealth in November is critical.

Despite the evangelical Christian orientation of Liberty University, Gov. Romney is not expected to address President Obama’s recent “evolution” on same-sex marriage in his speech to graduates.  We do know that Gov. Romney is expected hit more traditional commencement address fare, including the importance of hard work and spending quality time with family:

In the most practical, everyday terms, the best cultural assets are values as basic as personal responsibility, the dignity of hard work, and, above all, the commitments of family.  Take those away, or take them for granted, and so many things can go wrong in a life.  Keep them strong, and so many things will go right.

…I have never once regretted missing an experience or opportunity in business in order to be with my wife and five sons.  Regrets usually come the other way around, from missing moments with your children that don’t come again.  The same holds true for time with your parents as the years fall away.  Among the things in life that can be put off, being there when it matters most isn’t one of them.

To watch Gov. Romney’s speech live beginning at 10 a.m., Roanoke CBS affiliate WDBJ-7 will be livestreaming it here.

Whether you’re a Hokie or a Flame, prefer Mrs. Obama’s or Gov. Romney’s address, congratulations Class of 2012!
