Senate Democrats turned up the rhetorical heat on the floor today, this time to chastise the Capitol Police for their response to a Saturday protest over anti-abortion legislation. Thirty people were arrested.
Naturally, when there’s that much good copy flowing, the RTD’s Jeff Schapiro is going to be on site, and he reported gems like this from Sen. Chap Petersen:
Petersen, NoVA D senator, says police response to abortion-rights protest at state Capitol ‘more appropriate for a bar fight.’
And this, from Sen. Janet Howell:
Howell, another NoVa D senator, says of police presence at abortion protests: ‘Our state capitol is becoming an armed garrison.’
But Howell went further, trotting out that old favorite, Massive Resistance:
“Not since the Massive Resistance days of the 1960s have I seen such a disgraceful display of police presence.”
At a press conference, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling responded to these remarks by calling on the members to apologize to the police for doing their jobs.
