Congratulations on finding a new cause: protesting and boycotting Rush Limbaugh for calling Sandra Fluke a slut.
Fine. Do it. Who am I to stop you? Protest his advertisers, protest him, protest whatever. Peacefully, of course.
But at least make your argument consistent.
Did you protest Ed Schultz or his advertisers when he called Laura Ingraham a slut for no other reason than being a woman?
If not, and your argument is, “Laura Ingraham is a public figure,” first of all, no she’s not. She’s a private citizen. What you mean to say is she’s successful. And if the acceptability of crass speech is determined by the target’s success, then I suppose it would be just as acceptable had Mr. Limbaugh issued the same epithet to Rachel Maddow.
Did you protest Kate Walsh when she tweeted about protesting a Bristol Palin speech, “What does she know about college or abstinence?” If that’s not calling her promiscuous, I don’t know what is. Did you protest the advertisers for her show?
Are Kate Walsh and Ed Schultz against women rights? Why not? Because they agree with you?
Is Rush Limbaugh against women’s rights? Why? Because he doesn’t agree with you?
Obviously in either case, the consequent does not logically follow the antecedent.
If you strive at all for consistency and sound reason, you may be more wise to protest every celebrity attack on another woman; or to ignore Mr. Limbaugh as you did Mr. Schultz and Ms. Walsh. (He’d probably go away quicker if you did, anyway, and no one would be able to accuse you of only wanting to talk about social issues…)
If you doubt your hypocrisy, dear Liberals, please take the time to read the comments in the stories linked. I think you will find the language quite appalling.
I am, and will remain, your most humble and obedient servant,
A. Schwartz
PS: As of today, Mr. Limbaugh has issued an apology to Ms. Fluke. Will you forgive him?
