Full ‘snow moon’ over the Blue Ridge Mountains
By Lynn R. Mitchell | Tuesday, February 7th, 2012 | Shenandoah, VirginiaTonight’s full moon before it cleared the trees on the ridge behind my house.
Michie Tavern, located in the shadow of Mr. Jefferson’s Monticello, posted on their Facebook page today: “There will be a full moon this evening. The Colonial American name for this full moon is ‘Trapper Moon.’ The native tribes of the northern and eastern states often called this full moon the ‘Snow Moon’ or ‘Hunger Moon.’ This is due to harsh weather when heavy snows made hunting extremely difficult.”

Oooh! So pretty! Nice capture, Lynn!
Neat, Lynn. Thanks for posting this.
Wow! That is JUST what it looked like when I walked out the door just as it was coming up–and I live in the Northern Neck. I was dumbstruck at how big it was, and its color, and it looked just like your picture here. AMAZING!
Great picture!
I’m pretty sure I saw Newt Gingrich up there waving at us…..
And Ken wins the thread.
Great moon shot!
The moon was so bright last night that on my back deck, it was like daylight. I could read by the moonlight.
