The Virginian-Pilot is reporting that former five-term congressman Bob Daniel died yesterday of a heart attack at the age of 75.
I did some research for the Republican Party of Chesapeake a few years ago and discovered that Daniel was the only Republican to serve the 4th District in the 20th century. He was first elected in 1972 before being denied a 6th term by the late Norman Sisisky.
“The death of Bob Daniel is a great loss for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Bob was a quiet, but principled leader who led by example. He truly earned the title of ‘Virginia Statesman’,” said Rep. Randy Forbes.
Forbes is the current congressman representing Virginia’s 4th and Sisisky’s successor. He was elected in a special election in 2001.
Daniel also served in the Reagan and Bush Administrations as deputy assistant for Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger and as director of intelligence for the Department of Energy.
