Newt-ered
By Tim Donner | Friday, January 27th, 2012 | Catch-AllTo quote Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the chickens are coming home to roost.
When you have been outed for saying the things Newt said about the same Ronald Reagan to whose legacy you have attached yourself AND were ridden out of the House on a rail by your own party AND tried to claim with a straight face that you didn’t attempt to influence legislators after your company takes $1.6 billion from Freddie Mac AND ditched not one, but two wives once they became seriously ill, is it any surprise that the “establishment” circles the wagon to deny you a nomination that would result in devastating losses from the top of the ticket to the bottom?
At the final debate before Florida votes on Tuesday, the defining moment was Romney returning fire on Newt for owning Fannie/Freddie bonds…moments after Newt lambasted his opponent for the very same thing. Add in a more impassioned performance by Romney than we have ever witnessed, the first vestige of Romney going on the offense rather than defense about his wealth and success, the remnants of devastating beat downs on Newt by Elliott Abrams and others, and a strong and credible performance by Rick Santorum, and one gets a clear sense where this nomination fight may well be headed for Newt:
South.

The establishment is trying their best to make this Mitt Romney’s turn despite the fact that more than half of the republican primary voters I meet while canvassing say they refuse to vote for him if he is nominated. Conservatives are sick and tired of being corralled by the moderate and progressive republicans who ask them to vote for more big R rino’s.
Lord. I almost cringe each day to see the latest anti-Newt diatribe coming from the editors of Bearing Drift. This one is no different. Goodness, did anyone watch his interview with Greta on Fox News tonight. I really enjoyed it. It was two real people having a real converstation on a train (or was it a bus?). I wish we had more reporting like this.
Haven’t heard anything here about Rick Santorum who ALSO lies in VIRGINIA and who also DID NOT get his name on the ballot. (Did he even try?) packing up his marbles and going home to do his taxes, which aren’t due until April 15th. Like anybody cares about his tax returns.
But I really have to hand it to Ron Paul for the best line last night about Moon Colonies. That was PRICELESS! I am glad I’ll have the chance to vote for him on March 6th.
And Turbo, you can definitely put in that 50% of people you canvass who just don’t think they could stomach voting for Romney this fall. The last thing the GOP needs is another George H. W. Bush/Bob Dole/John McCain to drag us down yet again.
Turbo and BD readers. Frankly, I am astounded we are even having a discussion about Mitt Romney as some sort of Conservative hero to deliver us from Obamination. This guy voted for Paul Tsongas for President, ran to the left of Ted Kennedy, and was vehement in his opposition to Ronald Reagan before, during and after he was President. And this site has the nerve to call itself “Virginia’s Conservative Voice” and champion this guy? I really just don’t get. I have a feeling I am not alone in this sentiment.
“Outed for saying the things that” Newt said about Reagan? Really, why don’t you actually look at the full context of what he said instead of regurgitating the putrid talking points being put out by Romney’s camp.
I will take the word of Ed Rollins, Jeffrey Lord, Mark Levin, Craig Shirley, and Nancy Reagan over Elliot Abrams and Rich Lowry. And beyond what they said, I challenge you to actually read Newt’s full speeches and their full context within the debates of their time and tell anyone with a straight face that they how they were attacks on Reagan and how they undermined Reagan’s agenda.
