One gun a month going away?
By | Thursday, January 26th, 2012 | Politics, Virginia

The Senate Courts of Justice committee voted 8-7 to repeal the state’s one gun per month law:

Proponents, including the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Charles W. Carrico Sr. argued that the exemption-ridden law is simply an unfair way to punish law-abiding citizens. Mr. McDonnell, a Republican, supported it as a delegate representing Virginia Beach. He now says that technology has advanced enough to prevent crime and that the law is no longer necessary.

And as the Governor no longer needs to court the support, or ensure the silence, of the law’s godfather, former Gov. Doug Wilder, there’s even less need for him to remain in favor of the ban.

Not surprisingly, the committee vote broke down largely along party lines, with Republicans in favor of repealing the ban and Democrats against it. The notable exceptions: Senate majority leader Tommy Norment voted to keep the ban in place, while Democrat John Edwards voted for repeal.

About the only people who buy more than one gun a month are collectors, and they generally are unaffected by the ban because it does not apply to concealed permit holders. The one gun a month ban was always unneeded regulation, and it’s time to see it repealed. We should never allow passage of laws that contradict basic Constitutional rights in the first place.

Great news yesterday from Richmond. In 1993, Virginia legislators copied a one-gun-a-month statute enacted in South Carolina in 1975. South Carolina repealed its gun rationing law in 2004 The Virginia General Assembly should pass Senate Bill 323/House Bill 940 and Governor McDonnell should sign them into law this year to repeal a statute that only affects and penalizes law-abiding citizens since criminals, by definition, violate laws — especially silly gun control laws. The time is now to right this wrong of nearly two decades ago.

Since when did it become the role of government to dictate to law-abiding citizens an arbitrary amount of a legal product they may purchase in an arbitrary period of time. This issue is less about firearms and more about freedom versus a Nanny State.
