Bedford County Sheriff: Jens Soering Anniversary Reminds us of the Real Tim Kaine

The anniversary of a significant moment in Virginia’s history passed virtually unnoticed last week.  The mainstream media didn’t cover it because it’s “old news, but to the loved ones of Derek and Nancy Haysom and to the Bedford County community they called home, the anniversary didn’t go unnoticed.

It was two years ago that outgoing Governor Tim Kaine attempted to disregard the will of the people by sending convicted double-murderer Jens Soering back to his native Germany where he could have been released from prison after serving a minimum of two years.  Soering could have been freed this year had it not been for the swift action of incoming Governor Bob McDonnell who was able to block the transfer.

One of the most outspoken opponents of the Soering transfer was Bedford County Sheriff Mike Brown, who has developed a reputation as a tough-on-crime law enforcement officer during his nearly two decades in office.  In a weekend op-ed published in the Lynchburg News & Advance, Sheriff Brown explained why Gov. Kaine’s effort offended him and why that action alone should disqualify Kaine from representing the Commonwealth of Virginia in the U.S. Senate:

As a retired federal agent and a current Virginia law-enforcement officer, I can’t forget what Kaine tried to do. Like my fellow men and women in law enforcement, I took an oath to protect the citizens of Virginia from harm — including the evil that Soering brought into the Haysoms’ home that night in 1985.

I take that oath more seriously, it seems, than Kaine did.

After brutally murdering the Haysoms with the assistance of their daughter Elizabeth, Soering fled to England, where he was arrested and ultimately extradicted back to Virginia for trial.  As Sheriff Brown notes, the Bedford community, which lost its innocence after the murders, acted swiftly in the pursuit of justice:

Fortunately, the jury saw through Soering’s lies and took less than four hours to find him guilty and recommend that he be sentenced to two life terms in prison.

Not yet done, Soering spent the next 15 years taking advantage of every step in Virginia’s judicial system and wasting countless taxpayer dollars. He appealed his conviction to the Virginia Supreme Court. He then appealed to a federal judge. He brought his case to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. And he petitioned the Campbell County Circuit Judge. All of these delay tactics were denied, after which he sought and was denied parole time and time again.

Jens Soering was convicted by a jury of his peers, yet in contrast to his campaign promise to respect jury verdicts, Tim Kaine decided to disregard the people’s will in pursuit of what he thought was just.  When asked about it later, Kaine stated that he had “no regrets” for his action.

Why would Kaine let a convicted double-murderer avoid serving two life sentences for the murders he committed? That’s what a lot of Virginia residents and lawmakers have been asking.

According to Kaine, he did it because he didn’t expect to run for office again. As he told The Associated Press, “I frankly thought that I wouldn’t see my name on a ballot again.”

Think about that for a moment.

Kaine’s reply reveals two very important things: First, it reveals that Kaine knew the people of Virginia would oppose Soering’s release. And, second, it reveals that he didn’t care all that much because he didn’t plan on ever asking Virginians for their vote again.

But now he is. And he’s hoping we’ll forget what he did.

Read the rest of Sheriff Brown’s op-ed then ask yourself: Why should we elect someone to represent us if he doesn’t respect us?  Further, why did the mainstream media think the anniversary of Kaine’s action wasn’t newsworthy?  Does anyone honestly believe the media will find the anniversary of George Allen’s infamous “macacca moment” equally un-newsworthy?
