With the Jefferson Davis-Stonewall Jackson dinner mere days away in Richmond (the Democratic Party of Virginia’s huge fundraiser during the General Assembly session – so much for rules, eh?), one has to take a step back and wonder why no Democrat has outright declared themselves to be running for governor yet?
I guess Republicans just like to get a head-start on blood-letting, after all, they already have announced candidates for Attorney General (Sen. Mark Obenshain and Del. Rob Bell) and governor (Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli).
Virginia Oddsmaker tells me that the most likely candidates on the left are former governor and now U.S. Senator Mark Warner, who was in Richmond yesterday sizing-up the governor’s office for drapes. Come now, senator, we all know you already have the measurements.
And, today, just “passing through” Capitol Square was Mr. Green Energy himself, Terry McAuliffe. McAuliffe spent plenty of money and time on General Assembly races in 2011 that Democrats lost the state Senate and more seats in the House of Delegates – but there is such a thing as rewarding loyalty.
Looming as a distant third could be the man we all love as conservatives, Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Brian Moran. Moran has led the Dems into the abyss since Dickie Cranwell left; they have fallen so hard so fast that those of us on the right are wondering if they can ever recover (not that there is anything wrong with that).
Oddsmaker says Warner 3:1, McAuliffe 7:2, and Moran 25:1 on their runs for governor.
