Do minority voters drive without licenses?
By | Tuesday, January 17th, 2012 | Politics

That’s what I am gathering from esteemed genius and all-around political giant state Sen. Donald McEachin.

McEachin says attempts to require voters to show ID to vote target minorities who vote Democrat.

“Clearly, it is an attempt on the part of some to target Democratic voters,” said state Sen. Donald McEachin, D-Henrico County, who fears that some black, poor, older and working-class voters would be disenfranchised if the Republican proposals become law.(Virginian-Pilot)

Are we to believe that voters who drive to the polls are doing so without a driver’s license they could show?

There are laws against that. Perhaps if all these people are driving unlicensed, a State Senator might not want to be aiding and abetting lawbreaking.

Perhaps what McEachin is saying is that having voting locations in places with parking lots disenfranchises people who don’t have driver’s licenses, who according to McEachin are all minority, Democrat voters.

For some reason, if someone doesn’t have any identification, McEachin says they are minority, Democrat voters.

Why wouldn’t this bill disenfranchise a Republican voter? Why does it become disenfranchisement if the voter wanted to vote Democrat, but it’s not disenfranchisement if the voter votes Republican?

Please, genius McEachin. Enlighten us!

Why does requiring an ID only disenfranchise someone if they vote Democrat?

And why are you encouraging people to drive on Election Day without a license?

Hard as it might be for you to believe, there is a signficant segment of the population who don’t have driver’s licenses. And, yes, they are probably mostly minority voters.
You know what everyone who’s eligible to vote does have? A voter registration card. So that should be an acceptable form of ID to show at the polls. If the state wants to start putting photos on those, I don’t have any real problem with that.

All the more reason to replace physical keys with transponders linked to a licsense.

Steve, I wouldn’t have a problem with photo registration cards either.

Turbo: You might have misunderstood me. I wasn’t saying a lot of people drive without a license. I was saying they don’t have licenses because they don’t drive. They take th bus or they get a ride with friends who have a car.

Steve, I used to be a Virginia EMT.. Many a call to an mva.. Many folks drive with either suspended, revoked or no license. Few illegals in accidents I responded to had legal driving priveleges in VA. More frequently than some might think minorities often do not have legal driving privileges let alone proof of ID either.. Thisis not racist unless you want to construe it that way, just stating what was noticed on scene’s and enroute to Hx…

This is another PR issue the GOP did not need to create, just like the loyalty oath. In public’s eye, our party will be on the losing end once again.

Turbo: I remember from when I used to cover courts, ‘lo these many years ago, that many people drive without a license or on a revoked or suspended license… I never really broke it down demographically. But that was in Lynchburg and I’d guess that most of the habitual offenders, driving on a revoked, there were white.

    Who said they were driving?

That’s actually another good reason not to use driver’s licenses as Voter ID, we don’t want to take away someones right to vote for traffice offenses that might get their licensed suspended or revoked.

UMMMMM you can get a VA ID card from DMV for $10. I thought legally you always had to have some form of ID on you.

A lot of stores are taking the “ID everybody” approach now, you pretty much have to have ID if you drink or smoke. You also have to show ID at the doctors office now.

How can anyone function without ID anymore?

Maybe Al Shapton should file a law suit claiming the civil rights of minorities are being violated because they can’t by alcohol without an ID. If these minorities voted largely Republican, do you think Democrat’s would be carrying on like this?
