Sen. Yvonne Miller spends $50K to beat no one
By Brian Kirwin | Tuesday, December 13th, 2011 | PoliticsThank you, Democratic Senator Yvonne Miller!
Republicans won two close races to take the majority in the Virginia Senate, one by 226 votes and the other by 644 votes. Boy, if the Democrats had a bit more cash, maybe it could’ve made a difference.
As I’m reviewing Democratic Senator’s campaign reports, I noticed Sen. Yvonne Miller gave $10,000 to the Senate Democratic Caucus at the end of October.
Why so little? She must not have had a lot left after spending over $53,530 in September and October in her battle for re-election.
The funny thing is she was UNOPPOSED!
She paid over $11,000 for poll workers, over $16,000 for campaign signs, stickers and materials, over $18,000 for advertising and a fat $5,000 for political consulting, and she had over $59,000 left over.
She must have hired some smart people to advise her how to win a race where she was the only candidate!
So, from Republicans like me, thank you Sen. Yvonne Miller for spending over 50 grand on an unopposed campaign, keeping another 59 grand in the bank, and giving so little to other Democrats who might of won if you sent that kind of money to them.

$11,000 SOUNDS like a lot of money, but in her defense I must say that I encountered a number of her poll workers -and they were definitely the most qualified individuals that $11,000 could ever pay for. Her poll workers were well dressed, well spoken and represented the candidate in a professional manner.
My question is – with such high qualifications and achievement, – weren’t her paid pollworkers’ time have been better spent running their large corporations or finding a cure to the many diseases that ails our society? It is really a shame she had to waste their considerable talents standing at a poll in an unopposed election.
Slow news day, eh?
Seriously, though, Brian – with redistricting and the new areas being represented, even candidates without opposition had to do some campaigning this year. Heck, Sen. Frank Wagner had signs and stuff at his Norfolk precincts!
So did Jeff McWaters, but facts don’t interest Brian. He is so partisan he loses whatever perspective he may have once had. Plus, she had not hired him.
She is a Democrat. You can’t expect her to be very smart.
Frank Wagner gave over $100,000 to the Republican caucus and thousands more to candidates on top of that.
Jeff McWaters gave over $60,000 to the Republican caucus and many thousands to candidates, including $5,000 to close winner Bryce Reeves.
Vivian, Mike – defending Yvonne Miller’s selfishness gets you nowhere.
The best part about her actions is that it cost her a Chairmanship.
My question for Brian Kirwin is, as a comparison, how much money did Republican Ron Villaneuva (who ran a very contested race) or Republican Harry Blevins spend on poll workers?
Why don’t you look it up and tell us all?
She actually hired a consultant to advise her on how to run unopposed? OMG!
If I wanted to look it up myself, I would just get my own blog and write what I wanted to…but since you asked, I believe the answer is $0. Democrats have to pay a staff of people to work the polls for them on election day while Republicans rely on passionate volunteers (who show up for things even if there isn’t a paycheck in it for them)
Thanks. I wasn’t in a position to research it myself last night.
cool to be a Dem. I’ve been working polls for candidates (Republican) since I was 18 years old with nary a dime in recompense. & as you can imagine, some of those election days were cold, rainy, sleety & windy.
should I try to get on with OFA or SEIU to earn an election day paycheck?
Kelly, you have to pass some tests first. Make sure you don’t have a job, have documented prior experience with the “Occupy” protests where you can produce an arrest record, whine a lot about conservatives, have “victim” status traceable to some Republican or Tea Party sponsored legislation, hate Grover Norquist and are vocal about it, have been pepper sprayed at least once, blocked traffic or have placed one of your children on a train track to block commerce, own a “green” form of transportation, have been a former ACORN voter registrar who has registered Mickey Mouse, Adolf Hitler and lots of dead people, neglect your personal hygiene, don’t mind cashing checks that are signed by George Soros, and have political sympathy for radical Islam, Chavez, Castro and Marx.
