Cuccinelli seriously considering gubernatorial run
By JR Hoeft | Monday, November 21st, 2011 | PoliticsAttorney General Ken Cuccinelli, in front of more than seventy-five Young Republicans in Arlington, said that there was a “decent chance that I’ll run,” in response to a question about whether or not he’d run for governor.
Cuccinelli, one of the more popular figures in Virginia politics, said that he’d make his decision relatively quickly.
Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling demurred to now Gov. Bob McDonnell in 2007 and created a unity ticket when faced with a similar situation. At the time, he was also the sitting LG facing a possible protracted nomination fight with then AG, McDonnell. It was widely speculated that that decision to not engage in internecine political warfare was made to clear Bolling for the GOP nomination in 2013.
Cuccinelli has also said that he could challenge U.S. Senator Mark Warner in 2014.
Waiting for possible updates/statements from Bolling and Cuccinelli.

Got an email from Cucc the other day.
The first page, 3rd sentence, says, “They want to defeat me whether I run for re-election as Virginia Attorney General or if I am persuaded to run for Virginia Governor.”
The page where you could fill in your credit card info, which I didn’t, says [in the voice of the person replying to Cucc]
“I’ll help you win your next election. We can’t let the Left target and take out unswerving conservatives like you. And if you should decide to run for Governor, you have my permission to use my gift for that purpose too.”
Un-subtle much?
Sorry, it was a piece of snail mail, not email.
I’m all in either way.
I was there tonight . . . honestly, I would be shocked if he doesn’t run at this point. Interestingly, he also said that he wouldn’t resign as attorney general, either, if he did run.
Cuccinelli gets it.
TEA
Ken packs a room and turns it on like few this state has seen. Ken is the posterboy for what a Tea Party candidate is.
Cooch 2013 or 2014..
Date: Sept. 15, 2009
Place:Roanoke, VA
Setting: Rep. candidates for Virginia Attorney General debate
Question from Jay Warren: “Will you pledge tonight that if elected Atty. Gen., you will support Bill Bolling for Governor in 2013 and not run against him?”
Reply from K.C.”That’ s not something I would foresee
happening.”
Jay Warren: “So equivocally no?”
Response from K C : “Yes. Correct.”
The word “equivocally” is the “catch”. Most people hearing the question and answer thought K.C. was saying he would not run against Bill Bolling. According to the dictionary, what he actually said was AMBIGUOUS (can be taken more than one way), OBSCURE (vague) SUSPICIOUS, or DUBIOUS (questionable)
Atty Gen K.C. has done an outstanding job as Atty.Gen
It would be best for him to continue in that position for another term before running for Governor. Bill Bolling having the best interest of the Rep. Party at heart, set aside his desire to run for Governor to allow Gov.Bob McDonnell to run unopposed. This showed the true character of Bill Bolling and I think this is the type of character and loyalty we need as a Governor. I would hope Atty Gen. K.C. will show that same degree of character and loyalty.
I can’t wait for 2012 and 2013. It will be the year of the “now it’s my turn” nominees. Romney for President, Allen for Senate, and Bolling for Governor. As we all know when Republicans nominate the next person in line and work hard to crush challengers they win overwhelmingly and build the energy in the party.
“My turn” Bob Dole – lost and gave us Clinton
“My turn” John McCain – lost and gave us Obama
Yep…..next in line always trumps their ability to beat the Democrat. Pffft!
The “next-in-line” system did work pretty well for the former governor of California in 1980, though….
I see it this way… If the Supreme Court rules against ObamaCare Cucc still sits comfortable and runs for Governor. If ObamaCare is overturned, he re-runs for AG, accumulates a large war chest and beats Warner in 2014. Why ? He would skate in as AG for very little money while collecting millions for the Senate race. Look at this strategically not tactically.
Ken is without question the leading conservative in Virginia and has my complete support for whatever office he decides to run for. Bill Bolling has been good for the party, no doubt about that. However just because you are a good person doesn’t make you the best person for the job.
This is not surprising. You don’t “step aside” for a guy you can beat. And Cuccinelli can easily beat Bolling in a convention or a primary.
And now the plot thickens. With Bolling being the tie-breaker in the Senate, I can foresee backroom maneuvering on his part to prevent a tie-breaking issue to reach the floor or an ally to prevent a tie-breaking iteration.
So apparently some people read my previous comment and thought “I was going soft.” My post was meant to be sarcastic, and I thought it was clear what I was getting at. Britt Howard made the point I was making just without the tongue in cheek sarcasm. Here it is in plainer English.
The time for nominating the next person is over. As a country and a state we can not afford to go along to get along. We need politicians who are committed to fighting with everything they have for the fundamental principles that have been eroded in this country. Since first being elected to the state senate, Ken Cuccinelli has lead on every issue conservatives hold dear. He has continued to do that as Attorney General. He has the strongest voices for conservativism in the state, and a leading voice nationally as well. He is the kind of candidate conservatives need to rally behind, and if he chooses to run for governor, I can’t wait to support him from day one.
Also as a country we can no longer afford to be supporting the next person in line. That mentality was what got us into the mess we got into. When it comes to party leaders and nominees, we need to support the person who can best advocate for conservative principles. If we keep supporting people because it is “their turn.” Don’t expect things to change.
The whole support the next guy in line thing is all Republican stuff. You can bet the TEA party isn’t going to automatically support the next guy in the Republican’s line, and that goes for Bolling as well as Allen.
Willie D, many of us got that you were being sarcastic //grin//.
Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli received an early Christmas Present.
More e-mails from his buddy “Hockey Stick” Mann have been released. Over 2,000 more e-mails have been released in what is being called Climategate 2.0
And over 220,000 more on now on the net if anyone can figure out the password to see them.
Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works warns that the Obama administration is moving full speed ahead to implement global warming regulations that will impose the largest tax increase in American history, significantly raise energy prices, and destroy hundreds of thousands of jobs.
If any Republician candidates are unsure about man-made global warming, talk to the people in Senator Inhofe’s office. At least they understand what is going on.
Obama the global corporatist.. Who would thunk our first black president would be so anti America and anti capitalist? What an insult to black and other minority patriots. This is another “it was their turn” that I am afraid we will see more of unless people decide no mas. Obama has sent us spinning because we let him win. Lets not worsen this travesty by not having someone with Cooch’s capacity to fill the AG role who is ready to hit the ground running and fight.
The old way of waiting for your turn has run us into the wall and its like watching a slow motion nascar crash.. The would be front runners get wiped out while the smart runners pass the wreck with some luck and skill. This is part of Obamas strategy to pass his healthcare and other agendas let alone his strategy for re election. I know this is about Cooch running in 13 or 14 but if I may ask, do we have someone capable of filling his AG shoes in the running?
The situation of Dole and McCain created the next in line dilemma. Despite that, both of them challenged for the nomination and won the competive process. As for our next Gov race, credit goes to Bolling for yielding and his profile will rise during the next session. Though he is next in line, he is also probably the best candidate. He won a competitive race for Lt. Gov. his first time out and last time everyone was on the coatails. The problem with Cooch is that the next big thing he runs for, he will lose in the general election. He may be able to win re-election to AG, but that is it. He barely got relected to his state senate seat. If he gets the nomination for Gov or Senate, he will lose. The real pisser is that it will take him and the Republicans to get this, so the Cooch may provide two gifts to the democrats in two statewide elections.
Am I alone thinking we need Cooch for another term as AG?
James – No, you are not alone. I am not sure we need Cooch, but this would be his best plan. Lay low and run for re-election as AG. I am aware that Mary Sue Terry came out as not the best candidate for Governor, but at first she seemed unbeatable. Over her 8 years she built a great reputation and when it was “her turn” she was viewed as unbeatable, it was not just her turn. For now, running again for AG is the best plan. From now, that gives him 6 more years for folks to see a balanced portfolio of accomplishments. In NY and Conn we saw unbeatable AGs emerge for Gov and Sen, even though Spitzer became Clinet #9. The point is that these gentlemen laid low and became popular and then waltzed into office. Cumo did about the same thing.
