Bert Dodson Airs Humorous, but Out-of-Touch Ad
By Jason Johnson | Friday, November 4th, 2011 | Central Virginia, PoliticsWhen the elections are over, the award for the most entertaining campaign ad of the 2011 cycle probably should go to 22nd Senate District candidate Bert Dodson. Dodson, a Democrat and a former member of the Lynchburg City Council, is perhaps best known to central Virginia residents as the president of Dodson Pest Control.
In his memorable ad—a difficult feat when the airwaves have been saturated by campaign ads for months—Dodson taps into his experience in business by driving an exterminating van from his hometown of Lynchburg to Richmond, because, as he says while pulling into Capitol Square, “If there’s one place that needs pest control, this is it.”
Perhaps the funniest part of the ad is how out-of-touch it makes Bert Dodson look to voters. Recent polls suggest that while Virginians are disgusted with the direction the nation is going in, we are generally pleased with the direction our Commonwealth has taken—under the leadership of a Republican governor. Gov. McDonnell and the Republican-controlled House of Delegates need reinforcement in the Senate; not pest control.
On the bright side, if our newly renovated Capitol is ever invaded by ants or other insects, we’ll know who to call…after all, he should have lots of spare time after Tuesday anyway.

It is funny that you bring up this ad. I don’t live in that state Senate district (my state Senator is Frank Ruff), but I’ve heard 3 or 4 very conservative Republicans locally (in Lunenburg) say that they like Dodson’s ad the best of all they’ve seen.
When the election is over Bert Dodson is likely to be the winner sad but true.
