Gordy has a big final quarter in quest to unseat Colgan
By | Tuesday, November 1st, 2011 | Politics

Tom Gordy, known well to those of us in Hampton Roads as former Congresswoman Thelma Drake’s Chief of Staff, is running for state Senate against the venerable incumbent Democrat, Chuck Colgan.

Gordy, a small business owner and Navy Reserve officer, has been actively campaigning in the 29th District against Colgan.

It appears that Gordy has caught the attention of the Republican Party of Virginia and has received significant financial backing to make a final push this week to unseat the 85-year-old Colgan, who has been serving since 1976.

Gordy received close to $290k in contributions in October ($250k from the RPV), along with $138k in in-kind contributions. In comparison, Colgan only received $173k in contributions over the same period ($137k from the Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus) and $102k in in-kind contributions. (source: VPAP)

In Bearing Drift Magazine, we wrote:

Despite Colgan’s early money advantage, Gordy could see a late surge of support.

It appears we were right. Again.
