Fairman: Mamie Locke sets herself “up for stupidity”

By Lynda Fairman

At the League of Women Voters’ Debate for the 2nd Senate District, incumbent Sen. Mamie Locke and challenger Tom Harmon were asked how they had included York County, newly drawn into the district, in their campaign and their plans to represent York County.

While both candidates were invited to attend a recent York County Candidates’ Forum, Sen. Locke was a “no-show”. She nonetheless responded that she HAD attended the York County events. (I watched the entire York County Forum and knew this was not true!)

After Friday’s debate, I went up to Sen. Locke and commented, “We missed you at the York County Forum.” Her reply: “I don’t set myself up for stupidity!”

THIS is how she views constituents?! York County, if this is how Sen. Locke views you now, how will she represent you?

There IS a better choice: Tom Harmon has attended ALL invited debates and forums throughout the entire 2nd District, personally walking many neighborhoods and visiting local groups to meet constituents. He was interviewed on Steve Batton’s radio show twice, answering voter questions, while his opponent has refused to do the same. Mr. Harmon has a proven record of hands-on leadership and service with community groups such as Menchville House, Moton House, Newsome House, Marching Elites, and many others.

Sen. Locke has shown she only wants to represent a select few in the 2nd District while voicing disdain for the rest. Mr. Harmon has embraced the entire district, vowing to represent ALL of its constituents. It’s time to send a true representative to Richmond for District 2 – Tom Harmon!

Lynda, great piece and a revealing expose’ on Locke’s disdain for the people in York County. She is also having some trouble with the local Pro Choice crowd on Sundays after church. By the way, you are a great Constitutional Scholar and I have enjoyed your talks and discussions where you focus on a specific contemporary issue (i.e. property rights) and then walk it from an historical context through all relevant court interpretations up to a SCOTUS decision, complete with the unintended consequences.
