Senate 1st District “conservatives” are prepared to re-elect Democrat Miller
By JR Hoeft | Tuesday, September 27th, 2011 | Columns, PoliticsSo, an oft repeated mantra in the 1st Senate District is that the Republican who either represents them or is their nominee is somehow a “RINO!”
That’s the phenomenon I address this week in my Daily Press column.
But are all Republicans rowing together for Chohany? Nope.
On Facebook, there is a Tricia Stall write-in campaign. And all across the Internet, Chohany is facing the all-too-familiar accusations of “RINO.”
Hey, this is America, where anyone can vote for who they want and advocate for whomever they want. My only quibble is that if these “conservatives” wanted an alternative to Chohany, they should have run a candidate to challenge him in the Republican primary.
The bottom-line: “In order to have any chance at winning this bellwether district against a strong incumbent, where both parties will be scratching and clawing through Election Day, the GOP needs to be united.”
I don’t have a lot of confidence. Read my full column in the Daily Press.

U r a jerk. Vote Chhoany!
Anything but Miller, a Dem!
J.R.
Excellent piece to stimulate thought and comment. What comes to mind is “sour grapes” and fractured loyalties based on hurt feelings. Without the entire support of the core, the likelihood of Chohany prevailing are slim. The recent TV Chohany spots denote early desperation while his opponent has sufficient funds for a timely positive response. Partisan and special interest financial support for Chohany will in all likelihood dry up. It is a lost cause. Time to move on.
J.R.’s quotation marks hint at the point: the fringe right are radicals, not conservatives.
The choice is really simple… Miller a liberal Democrat, or a Republican some of those fringe “conservatives” who aren’t quite potty trained, are trying to sabotage.
I read the transcript at the Daily Press web chat today and I was shocked when I read that Tricia doesn’t live in the First District. If that’s the case, why does she vote at the Main Street Library with me?! I would have loved to hear Chohany’s answer to the question.
Love your closing comment on the Daily Press, “Who’s the RINO now?” Seriously, Republicans do tend to eat their young. I think some of them relish losing elections. That way they don’t have to really govern.
I read the full transcript of your comments in the Daily Press. You totally missed why Tricia Stall didn’t get elected. There are two types of campaigns – primaries and general elections. Her tactics, stances on issues, style, and personality were perfectly suited to a primary, where voter turnout is smaller and a fringe candidate who sounds angry, even when saying numbingly stupid things, can draw enough people to the polls to pull off a win. After all, it is largely party activists who participate in primaries. General elections are different. Extremes tend to turn off moderate voters, and energize activists from the other side. If a candidate appears, as Ms. Stall effectively did to those important moderate, independent voters, to be REALLY extreme, then the independents are also motivated to vote against that candidate. By coming across as a freak show, she got the moderates off of their duffs and out to the polls – to keep her out of office. The GOP can do this whole “You’re a RINO” thing all it wants, and it will make party activists really happy. But they are committing general election suicide by doing so.
I’m a little unclear on what basis Chohany has been labeled a RINO. Is it guilt by association because he’s allied with Sen. Norment? Having done done a long ed board Q&A with him…it’s up on the Gazette site….I didn’t see any particular instance where he deviated from the GOP line, except an attempt to finesse a question about discrimination against gays to be on both sides of the issue, but that’s the same finesse that McDonnell has done “there shouldn’t be any discrimination, but I don’t think it should be in the law.”
Oh, I get it J.R.; to be a true conservative in the republican party of Virginia you have to pledge not to conserve our transportation infrastructure. Pure and simple, on these pages, a true conservative is a person who is totally against conservation. My, how much farther can the Party sink into denial? How far can it be detached from reality before it comes to its senses. In my book being anti tax is not the same as being conservative, especially when it simply transfers cost to our children. But thanks J.R. for putting such a laser sharp focus on what the republican party in Virginia has really become; that is, anti reality.
Currently, Tricia is fighting to retain property rights in Matthews County. If you understand UN Agenda 21 then you understand how NGOs like ICLEI and Public-Private Partnerships infringe on these rights.
Chohany supports Public-Private Partnerships which explains the RINO comment. This comment was not made by Tricia but somehow its tied to her.
Therefore, Chohany is not a true conservative because he supports these organizations that infringe on our property rights and true soveignty in the name of Globalization.
Mr. Jackson,
Please explain how Public-Private Partnerships undercut private property rights. I am familiar with Agenda 21, but can’ make the connection?
he supports public-private partnerships as a way to build roads without increasing taxes. That’s probably not very realistic, but it doesn’t have anything to do with the UN or private property rights.
A Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) involves the media, universities, city governments, local businesses and chambers working together to push a corporate global agenda. This is why your local ODU Business Professor is providing a “State of the Region” address rather than a political figure. We no longer have Constitutional Government but a fascist one.
On a basic level, the very definition of Public-Private Partnership invokes Crony Capitalism. Once ingrained in government, these corporations will protect their self-interest and the citizens’ do not have the ability to get that corporation out of their community. We are seeing this influence as citizens are referred to as Human Capital or Customers.
As for the UN Agenda 21, our Congress denied the Kyoto Treaty and because of this, they circumvented this agenda by pushing it on the PPP level. The United Nations and our Federal government are using Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and corporations to work with Public-Private Partnerships to by-pass our Constitutional government and push their global agenda.
To not advocate for these Public-Private Partnership relationship either shows that a person is naive or protecting their self-interest, both are dangerous and the citizens are hurt in the end. Obviously Steve is with the agenda or he would not have dismissed it so quickly.
JJ-Yep, JJ, I’m part of the global conspiracy that’s percolating through your brain. We hold our meetings out in back of the former sites of Godfathers Pizza locations.
Could somebody who’s a little more in touch with reality than JJ explain to me why Chohany’s got the RINO rap?
That one is so old. While your in the back of Godfathers Pizza come up with another response to that.
If you wish to combat ideas…let’s have at it. But you know that your so-called global conspiracy is well documented and out there in the open.
So, you resort to name calling.
Sorry John; you idea is just so weird. I think there is a place for well thought out PPVs, and I think there is a place for government managed projects. Neither method is superior in all cases. For example, I happen to think the trend toward PPVs for building major transportation infrastructure is a poor excuse and will cost us billions over the life of the concessions. On the other hand, PPVs to redevelop areas of a city that need investment can be a win-win for the private sector and the public sector as well. So to see conspiracy in this process without an evaluation of the project itself to me is exhibiting paranoia, not analysis.
Surprise! Surprise! The commercial realtor Mike whose tied in with local government claims its weird also. I would’ve never seen that coming.
Yes, your public-private partnership is a win-win. It’s a win for the local politician like Mickey Chohany whose a part of it and a win for the business that’s involved. For the community and the citizens, they are screwed.
BTW, who determines if something needs redeveloped?
Mike Barrett must LOVE brilliant government actions like Obama giving a half a BILLION loans to one of his top donors, who runs SOLYNDRA, only to go bankrupt and leave us the taxpayers holding the bag
Yep, crony capitalism at its core, but the type that Mike Barrett must love
Well John, not knowing of the details of the PPV you mentioned, I have no idea if the community or the citizens got the short end of the stick. However, here at the Beach, a number of PPVs have been done that have been highly successful from the standpoint of the citizens. Of course, not everyone agrees, but the basic structure, that is, the public pays for the public improvements and the developer invests in the real property has paid off for both parties. Neither alone could have done the project; working jointly, a successful venture has created significant commercial real estate value that increases the tax base and lowers the tax rate for everyone.
Mickey Chohany is pretty much the perfect example of a “Chamber of Commerce Republican.” If the party doesn’t have room for them anymore, if EVERY nominee has to be a Tea Party activist or home schooler or Ron Paul supporter, there isn’t going to be much of a Republican Party.
Mike, We now understand the words of the dissenting Supreme Court votes during Kilo v. New London ruling when our property rights were infringed by the Globalists.
“Any property may now be taken for the benefit of another private party, but the fallout from this decision will not be random. The beneficiaries are likely to be those citizens with disproportionate influence and power in the political process, including large corporations and development firms. As for the victims, the government now has license to transfer property from those with fewer resources to those with more.”
Our Constitution has been circumvented to the point at which your opinion does matter as to someone else’s property. The Supreme Court gave you that right in 2005. Now, this cronyism uses his taxes to destroy his own property.
We now have a corporation (known as a Public-Private Partnership) taking away our property rights with our own tax money.
Steve,
Yes, Chohany is a Chamber Republican, the Chamber is one of five entities I’d mentioned that meet behind Godfathers.
There were two entities missing from that list, they are the American citizen and the Entrepreneur, protected by the Constitution. They were the true innovators that made America great for so long and we use to be protected by a Constitution.
They were not approved by a University staff or monitored by a chamber. Their assets weren’t planned by a group meeting behind Godfathers while the Press ran cover.
You really need to figure out a better way to debate. Those tactics aren’t going to work much longer, even though America as a prosperous nation is near the end. Thanks to “Chamber of Commerce Republicans”
