Primary Day
By JR Hoeft | Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011 | PoliticsPolls are now officially open in today’s primaries.
If you have anything interesting to note about today’s election, use this post as an open thread. Additionally, as Bearing Drift contributors receive information throughout the day, we will be update this post.
For information about the candidates, check out VPAP.org. It’s a great resource.
By the close of polls today, the race for the General Assembly will officially be on. Today is also the last day any candidates can file to run.
Update (4:06 p.m.): Contingencies were put into place this afternoon after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake occurred just to the northwest of Richmond in Mineral, VA. According to Donald Palmer, the Secretary of the State Board of Elections, there should be no delay in the continuing of the election, but he did cite state code in an email to election officials:
If polling places are deemed unusable or inaccessible due to this emergency and “unforeseen combination of circumstances” please refer to Section 24.2.310 (D) for options in changing polling places or alternatives. See AG opinion as well. You are able to request this change by email to SBE. SBE is able to receive any request for any proposed emergency changes to polling places.
Some polling places are located in schools or government buildings that have now been evacuated or forced the officers of elections to leave the polling places. You should request from local officials that these precincts be allowed to resume voting if there is no
pressing safety issue. There is no legal provision locally to cease an election. Only the Governor can postpone an election in all or
part of Commonwealth pursuant to Sec. 24.2-603.1 of the code of Virginia; no such emergency has been declared by the Governor. If this emergency has resulted in your inability to verify a voter’s eligibility to vote, please use provisional ballots.

Went to get my newspaper this morning, and there was also a Rick James lit piece on my porch. It’s Democratic Primary Day in the 90th.
I voted in the 36th Dist. State Senate primary for Jeff Frederick at Swans Creek Elementary School at 7:20 AM and was number 20. For a late August primary in what is generally a blue precinct, that is pretty high — that is about 1 voter every 4 minutes. I think that bodes very well for Jeff given he represented this precinct during his 3 terms in the House and provided the residents there with excellent constituent services.
I’m still undecided on whether Tito will break 40 percent or not. My gut feeling after seeing those turnout numbers in that precinct is that he won’t.
I worked Gunston precinct until just after 8:00 a.m. and we had around 25 voters.
Most boring election day I can remember in a while. Only thing I’m covering is Norment-Frechette primary. Gee, I wonder how that will turn out? York county has some good supervisor primaries and a really juicy commonwealth attorney primary, but the county reporter gets those.
Voter #131 at 4:14 at Trinity Church, Lancaster Court House, out of 1300 registered voters. Only race was for state delegate. I predict Margaret Ransone of Westmoreland County will win about 65% of the vote. There is a Crabill type candidate running who managed to buy a few radio ads railing against all the “urban Richmond money” that is “buyer her votes.” Will there be a “tune in here” live feed hear on Bearing Drift as has been done before?
