EARTHQUAKE!
By | Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011 | Catch-All

FACEBOOK AND TWITTER TRAFFIC REPORT EARTHQUAKE ACTIVITY IN WASHINGTON, CHARLOTTESVILLE, RICHMOND.

AFTERSHOCKS STILL  COMING IN.

UPDATE (1.59pm): Mineral, Virginia was the epicenter of the quake.  Had to be a 4.0 tremor at least.  Pictures off the wall and a few scared kids in Kents Store, Virginia.  Electricity and phones (and internet) working.  Estimated time of quake was 1.57pm.

UPDATE (2.06pm): Epicenter was 12 mi northeast of Columbia, Virginia.

UPDATE (2.23pm): Additional small tremors now… nothing major, but just enough to listen for them.  Eerily enough, it is dead quiet outside.  It’s as if the entire animal kingdom said “woah!  what the heck was that?!”

UPDATE (2.27pm): More tremors, very light and distant.  Hearing one single bird chirping… they really do know, don’t they?  Beyond that, all quiet at Kents Store, Virginia.

UPDATE (3.08pm): North Anna nuclear power plant has shut down both reactors automatically.  Beyond this, there are still a few aftershocks, some you can feel — others you cannot.  No fire engines or ambulances running… so it would appear as if all is well in this part of Virginia.

UPDATE (3.14pm): Sarah Kenney — youngest daughter (3) — remarks: “Maybe someone was kicking the house?”

UPDATE (3.22pm): Another good aftershock.

UPDATE (3.29pm):  Here’s your explanation for the Great Quake of 2011…

Makes total sense to me… and as you can see here, we’re all doing just fine.

…but I want to find this bear now.

This quake just woke my daughter up as she had been napping her in crib. My two year old son was visibly scared and disturbed. Our windows were shaking and I feared they would break although they didn’t. I’ve felt minor quakes in CA and Okinawa but this was the strongest one by far.

The cause? It was reported that this sheet has finally acknowledged that increased revenue must be part of the solution. Film at 6:00 PM.

Pretty serious shaking here in Fairfax County. My desk moved and all the furniture was banging and bumping. Amazingly, nothing was broken. However, it did wake up my wife’s cat who was sound asleep in a closet. It normally takes something just short of a nuclear detonation to do that. Remarkably, no damage except for one framed certificate that fell off a bookshelf and broke. We have not felt any of the aftershocks. My sister-in-law in New Jersey called and said her doors and windows were shaking there.

Actually, Mike, according to the USGS, it was caused by the Founding Fathers collectively rolling over in their graves at the amount of public treasure being squandered on entitlement programs.

Just got word that the roof of the CVS in Oakton in Fairfax County collapsed. No injuries reported, thank God.

Wow, Mike’s is stretching from earthquake and connecting to more revenue. Since the Dems have us hanging upside down, they are using this earthquake to “shake” the rest of the quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies out of our pockets. If the first tremor didn’t dislodge it, the aftershocks will. And what kind of disgusting economic porn are you going to feature at 6:00 PM?

Pretty good two minute shake in Williamsburg. Surry nuke plant also automatically shut down. Doesn’t seem to be any damage. Cell phone service was spotty, probably because everyone picked up their cell phone to say “WTF” at about the same time.

    Some damage photos from WTKR…

There are also unconfirmed reports that the Washington Monument is leaning to the left, or the right depending on which side you view it.

Hurricane Irene may come to visit this weekend. Just to cheer people up.

We just updated our “Primary Day” post to reflect how this incident has impacted the election:

In news unrelated to the earthquake, the Olympic IOC announced today that they are taking away Lindsay Vonn’s gold medal from the Vancouver Olympics. They have decided to award it to Barack Obama since no one has ever gone downhill faster than he has.

  15. valentinus August 23, 2011 17:31 pm

    HisRoc,

That’s an outrage since Obama took his own course downhill not the sanctioned route.

Just a thought: we have wildfires in the Great Dismal Swamp, a hurricane bearing down on us, and now the strongest earthquake since 1875 here…either God is testing Gov. Bob McDonnell’s ability to handle multiple crises or He’s really pissed McD hasn’t declared yet for 2012.

  17. Craig Kilby August 23, 2011 18:06 pm

My goodness. A small tremor and the Earth is Falling. This is better than a forecast for a snow flurry in Richmond.

  18. LittleDavid August 23, 2011 18:19 pm

    J.R.,

I thought about posting about the signal God must be trying to send us, but thought better of it. I think I learned my lesson on this after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. Initial reports were that the shuttle broke up with the debris field being in the area of Palestine, Texas. At the time, peace efforts in Palestine were a hot topic. Immediately, God fearing citizens from both sides pointed to how this was not a coincidence, that God was trying to send us a warning. I guess it we should not be too amazed that they came to radically different conclusions.

I was pretty amazed that those who pointed that God was sending us a sign that we were going too easy on the Palestinians could come to that conclusion. Israeli newspapers were full of stories about how proud they were of the first Israeli citizen to go into space, but when this first Israeli died upon reentry, somehow this was a sign from God that Israel was wrong in not being harder on the Palestinians.

I guess I should not be surprised. Some people look at the story of Jesus and come to the conclusion that Jesus never existed. The whole story of Jesus was made up to spread evil amongst true believers they say.

It is my hope that God does not just give up on us. God has proven to be merciful, and it is my hope His limits. I am not expecting mankind to follow the perfect example of the leadership of Jesus. It is just my hope that more people try to follow that example.

I am not ashamed to claim I love Jesus.

Lots of humor going around on twitter. Best one i’ve heard is that is wasn’t an earthquake – merely Chris Christie jumping into the race.

  20. HisRoc August 23, 2011 20:45 pm

    William,

    RAOTFLMAO!

  21. ToR August 23, 2011 22:18 pm

Since there appeared to be minimal damage and I’m not aware of anyone who was hurt, this must be the earthquake you’re talking about:

  22. Ann Flandermeyer August 23, 2011 23:25 pm

Maybe God is sending the hurricane to put out the fires in the Great Dismal Swamp. And the earthquake….just to make sure we’re paying attention.

  23. Jay D August 24, 2011 16:02 pm

    Shaun – What a cutie!
William Jackson – Ditto HisRoc!! :)
LD – It’s a natural phenomenon (like hurricanes and peat bog fires), but if/when locusts swarm DC, I’ll join you.

  24. LittleDavid August 26, 2011 19:38 pm

    Jay D,

It might not be so hard for those who follow attempt (and we all fail in our attempts) to follow Jesus to get you to listen to us if we did not have so many money changers attempting to make a living off Jesus Incorporated.

Read the Gospels and give Jesus a chance before you judge him only on what you hear through the filtered glasses.

I am not sure if Jesus was/is God, but if he was only a man, he is the man I wish to attempt to follow. If he was only a man, my love for him is even greater if you can understand that. If he was God, then it was too easy for him. But if he was only a man?

I love Jesus. I call Rabbi and I weep that I fail so often in my attempts to follow my leader’s example.
