The “Contact Report”
By | Friday, August 19th, 2011 | Catch-All

Have you noticed anything different about Bearing Drift this week?

Probably not, except for the fact that our information and commentary continues to surpass your expectations.

That being said, we did introduce one small new feature on the homepage – the daily “Contact Report”.

A “contact report” is a description, generally to a ship’s captain, of the range, bearing, closest point of approach (CPA), time to CPA, and characteristics of vessels and objects at sea that fall within a certain range, usually 5 nautical miles.

The idea here is that if it looks like there might be a collision – as in, there is no bearing drift – both ships are required to take action (usually to starboard – the right!).

So, our contact reports are the stories and commentary that we think fall within our range (Virginia politics) and warrant our attention. We’ll attempt to have those stories posted not later than 7 a.m. And, if possible, we may update it throughout the course of the day – especially if there is a breaking story.

The idea here is to keep the contributors and you informed of stories and issues that perhaps we haven’t covered.

That’s it in a nutsell. Hope you enjoy it!

Tell us what you think. Is this valuable to you? Will you use it?
