AP: Spokeseman says Perry is in
By | Thursday, August 11th, 2011 | Politics

The Associated Press is reporting that Texas governor Rick Perry is running for president.

Perry spokesman Mark Miner said the governor would make his intentions known on Saturday while visiting South Carolina and New Hampshire just as most of his presidential rivals compete in a test vote in Iowa.

Jim Riley, my good friend from Virginia Virtucon, and I collaborated on this graphic:

Welcome to the race, governor!

Be sure to listen to my “Two Minute Drill” this weekend, which Norm Leahy will post when the show is released, but you can get a preview by listening to my appearance yesterday on Coy Barefoot’s “Charlottesville Right Now” from WINA. I speak about why Perry’s entry is so important.

It should also be noted that with Perry entering the race, Governor Bob McDonnell now becomes chairman of the Republican Governors’ Association.

In a strange way the multiplicity of Repub candidates is helpful to the party. The Dems and their media acolytes and union loons are forced to shift their gaze and their tactics constantly in their attempts to “Chill” them as Politico so deftly didn’t put it. Bachmann has benefited by coming after Sarah Palin for instance. It’s too bad the Repubs don’t know how to fight like the NRA when slandered (see how the NRA dealt with Clinton for an example) but BD’s constant head nods to Webb and Warner (Brian Kirwin excepted) indicate how deep rooted Repub fecklessness runs. Sorry to be blunt.

As for Perry, I don’t see how he beats Romney in the typical Blue states. If Romney wins in the Midwest too then I think that’s the match.

    Another evangelical Texas governor? Really?

valentinus – Webb was a Republican and Warner at least engages. I’ll at least dialogue with them.

Now, they’ve shown nothing to be but legislative leftists, but I’ll at least try to get their perspective.

If you call that a head-nod, so be it. Don’t think for a minute though that I wouldn’t prefer a conservative serving in their stead.

  4. valentinus August 11, 2011 20:45 pm

    JR,

Their “perspective” communicated to you is not their perspective. Just speaking as a long time observer, Republicans in general are very deferential to conservative talking Dems. In the distant past they actually were a bit conservative. Now it’s just a rhetorical costume. Pelosi (& Reid) recruited leftists who could say something conservative without wincing and still hated them for even that ability (blue dogs RIP). You acknowledge as much too.

Good and Good. What’s better is a Perry/McDonnell race. A winning ticket for sure.

    JR,

Why is my comment being blocked?

Good thing I’m awake HisRoc. I’ll take a look under the hood.

    JR,

The real question is why some posters on BD are subjected to “approval?”

I thought that BD was bigger in that regard than the “group-think” liberals over at Blue Virginia and NLS. I’m beginning to think that might not be the case. If you don’t want me to post here, then just say so. That is what Lowell Feld and Ben Tribbett did. Nice company that you are keeping, JR.

    @HisRoc –

Probably nothing to do with you… sometimes the WP-Comments widget will mark certain commenters as “spam” for apparently no good reason. Does it all the time, unfortunately — and we don’t notice until someone says something, e-mails, or we say “gee… I wonder what happened to (fill in the blank)?”

BTW, I did not get this cartoon picture until my 8-year old came up behind me and explained it. Nice touch!

    Shaun and Jim,

I apologize if I accused BD unfairly of filtering comments. My bad. One of the things that I have admired about this blog is the willingness of your contributors to accept and respond to contrary points of view. That sets you apart from the liberal echo chambers who cannot tolerate moderate, independent views. And that is what democratic discourse is best judged by.

Either Perry or Romney will elected next year. Really good piece on Perry.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/8694278/Rick-Perry-the-Paint-Creek-boy-who-would-be-king.html

Barry needs to go. If republicans need to nominate Big Bird to get rid of Barry, will be happy to support Big Bird.

I think Perry immediately becomes the front runner for the nomination. He seems to have Tea Party cred as well as support from some “establishment” Republicans. He’s about the only candidate who bridges that gap. I know the latest conventional wisdom is that the nomination will come down to Romney and an anti-Romney candidate, but I’m still not convinced Romney runs that strong. For Romney to make a serious run at the nomination this year, all the other candidates have to be politically incompetent. There are just too many things about him that are turn off the base.

An alternate view on Perry …

The man just might turn out to be “all hat and no cattle”. Looks like his Texas jobs numbers & balanced budgets came from … yep, you guessed it ~ stimulus funds ($6 billion+) from DC. BIG cuts, however, going down in Austin this year.

Secondly, watch Perry give a speech – George W. redux. Not sure the striking similarity will play well with independents OR that many republicans?

I’m lining up with HisRoc on this one: “Another evangelical Texas governor? Really?”

    The Christie watch lives on.

  15. valentinus August 12, 2011 22:08 pm

JD says Looks like his Texas jobs numbers & balanced budgets came from … yep, you guessed it ~ stimulus funds ($6 billion+) from DC.

Amazing. So what happened in all the bankrupt Blue states that received even more stimulus funding? Did they buy gold and a Swiss bank account?

  16. Brian Kirwin August 13, 2011 06:43 am

I’ve only seen one speech from Perry, and it was pretty standard.

Nifty move to leak the announcement the day of the debate, hijacking the whole thing.

Newt is still the only candidate offering ideas. Pawlenty and Bachmann look like kids. Romney is on cruise control, but he’s been doing this so long, he’s rehearsed every word.

My big question – Why does is the press allowed to ask questions? Shouldn’t we get people who are unbiased?

  17. Jay D August 13, 2011 17:35 pm

valentinus – “all the blue states that received even more” would be, uh … just ONE state ~ California. TX leads the other 49 in haulin’ in stimulus cash.

Just saying, if the platform strategy is beat up bailouts, stimulus & fed hand-outs and the pitch is, “Pick me, I balance budgets and create jobs ~ even during recessionary times.” … BUT 97% of your budget shortfall was balanced by stiumulus and most of your new jobs were courtesy of US taxpayers, your creds could be a bit suspect??!

IMHO, Perry might well woo the base but likely not play well w/ the middle or intelligent voter. Plus rumors he’s a skank-dog won’t help his campaign either.

Brian ~ And where would you find them?! :)

2012 = Agent P. v. President Doofenschmirtz. Pass it on.
