Readers react to Obama speech (or an organized letter-writing campaign by leftist old people)
By JR Hoeft | Tuesday, July 26th, 2011 | PolicySo, I was happily minding my own business last night watching baseball (that’s right, I didn’t bother watching the seventh prime-time address of the Obama presidency) when into my email box pops this letter from Nancy (unedited):
PLEASE SIGN A BUDGET WITH THE PRESIDENT. I WATCHED THE SPEECH WITH THE PRESIDENT AND I AGREE WITH HIM. TAXS THE 2% PEOPLE WHO ARE MILLIONAIRES AND BILLIONAIRES AND MAKE THEM PAY MORE. YOU JUST CAN’T CUT SPENDING WITHOUT MAKING MORE MONEY. POLITICS HAVE TO BE PUT ASIDE. SIGN THE BILL THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA WANTS AS IT IS ALOT BETTER THAN THE REPUBLICANS BILL. I HAVE LEARNED 2 THINGS ABOUT MONEY. EITHER SPEND LESS OR MAKE MORE. SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD PLAN. REPUBLICNAS ARE PLAYING A BIG GAME AND NOT REALIZING WHAT THEIR BILL WILL DO FOR THE 98% OF U.S CITIZENS. RAISE THE DEBT LIMIT BUT NOT FOR JUST 6 MONTHS BECAUSE WE WILL BE IN THIS PREDICAMENT AGAIN. STOP THE INSANITY AND SIGN THE PRESIDENTS BILL.
MADE AS HELL AT REPUBLICANS AND I KNOW I WILL NOT VOTE FOR ANY OF THEM IN THE ANY TIME SOON.
NANCY
First, Nancy, BD can’t sign a budget, as much as we’d like to (not that Senate Democrats would ever propose or pass one). Second, given your screed regurgitating leftist propaganda, there’s no way you’d be voting for a Republican anyway. Third – and the all caps is a dead giveaway – you’re obviously part of the generation that got us into this mess in the first place. Yea, I said it. I’m tired of this so-called greatest generation and their baby boomer children talking about what they’re entitled to. They’ve only made a mess of this place for their children and grandchildren.
Shortly after reading Nancy’s letter, I got this missive from Connie:
YOU HAVE JUST GOT TO FIX THIS, IF YOU WERE DEPENDING ON A SOCIAL SECURITY CHECK TO KEEP YOU FROM HOMELESSNESS, OR REALLY KNEW WHAT IT MEANS TO BE POOR, YOU WOULD HAVE THE RICH PEOPLE PAYING THEIR FAIR SHARE IN TAXES AND NOT TAKING AWAY THE ONLY LIFELINE SOME OF US HAVE LEFT. I REMEMBER WHEN YOU MADE ALOT MORE MONEY YOU GOT PUT INTO A HIGHER TAX BRACKET. NOW THE RICH JUST GET RICHER AND THE POOR (PEOPLE LIKE ME , THAT CAN’T WORK ANYMORE) JUST BECOME HOMELESS. IT’S GOTTEN TO THE POINT THAT I CANNOT TAKE ANYMORE! IF I BECOME HOMELESS BECAUSE YOU CAN’T COMPROMISE AND STOP ALL THE CHILDISHNESS, AND STOP MAKING A MOCKARY OF OUR GOVERNMENT AND WORK WITH THE PRESIDENT, WELL I JUST CAN’T GO ON LIVING. I AM TOO OLD TO BE HOMELESS. AND I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT FEELS THIS WAY. I KEEP HOPING AND PRAYING EVERYDAY FOR THINGS TO GET BETTER. I’M ABOUT TO JUST GIVE UP. I CAN’T BELIEVE ANY OF YOU THINK ABOUT ANY OF US WHEN …ALL YOU THINK ABOUT IS YOUR GREEDY SELVES AND SAVING YOUR OWN FAT WALLETS. START WORKING WITH THE PRESIDENT AND STOP EMBARRASSING OUR COUNTRY IN FRONT OF THE REST OF THE WORLD. I AM SO SICK OF YOU DISRESPECTING OUR PRESIDENT, SHAME ON YOU!
Connie at least admits to her being old in her email, unlike Nancy. What I found striking about the email is that it was well after 10 p.m. when I received it, so she must have been writing this from her home computer. How many poor people own computers? Seems that another member of the greatest generation is all about class warfare – the same pap that has been fed to them from the progressive movement for the past nine decades.
For some reason, I think BD is getting Majority Leader Cantor’s love notes from his constituents. But then we got this great missive to Congressman Wolfe from Cynthia in Loudoun County:
Congressman Wolfe,
The needs of our country should superceede any partisan political stance. I strongly suggest that you and members of your party support the President by raising the debt ceiling. Doing so insures the well being of the United States of America. We cannot just decide not to pay our debts. Many lives are dependent upon your action.
The common lie that Republicans want to create jobs is often stated, but actions of the party haven’t proven so.
The citizens of this country are worse off now than at any other time since the depresssion. This is happening while you and your colleges are sitting in Washington playing partisan politics. I can only hope that God will enlighten the members of the Republican party and that God will teach each of you christian charity and compassion. I am an educator and a loyal citizen of this country who strongly disagree with what your party leaders are saying and causing extreme hardship for all Americans except for the financial elite.
Please stop the bickering and end this false crisis immediately.
Respectfully,
Cynthia
Since when do liberal educators invoke God for support? Certainly not in the classroom.
Common in all these letters is the same lie repeated over and over again by the president: that it’s partisanship (ie, blame the GOP) that’s the cause of this nonsense.
The reality is that this president’s budget was rejected by the liberal U.S. Senate 97-0.
Republicans have offered no less than two budgets that have been rejected by the Democrats in the Senate.
Speaker John Boehner was willing to deal with the president over $800 billion in new taxes when the president decided that he’d tack on an additional $400 billion. How can you negotiate with someone who goes UP in price?
At any rate, these letters are so typical of leftist thought and mindless belief in propaganda. Unfortunately, their three votes trump my one.
What’s wrong with America? You just read it. Thanks, greatest generation and public schools!

“Fair share?” Excuse me, “FAIR SHARE”? I have a question for your correspondent (I am guessing, robo-correspondent): who decides what is fair? Suppose you even like the current group of “deciders” in office. Well, elections roll around, and sooner or later you get a group in office you don’t like. Still want them to have that kind of power?
Word for the day: Psalm 146:3 – “Do not put your trust in princes.” Any of them. They’re just people, and they should be given the job of governing sensibly, but not of “saving” us.
Are you sure that both those “leftist” letters didn’t come from our good friend MB? You could sniff the radical leftist fire, brimstone and damnation by the tone and content of how they were written.
Would it surprise anyone to find out (we probably will sometime shortly after President Obama leaves office) that either/both Obama’s campaign wing and the Dem National Committee run troll shops that target message boards and blogs that trend conservative?
Its no mystery why offshore bank deposits are on the rise.
It’s Congressman Wolf, not Wolfe. At least “Cynthia” didn’t say “Tom Wolfe” like some leftists moron robocaller did on my answering machine a few years ago.
Ya’ll are so full of hate, it’s kinda sad.
Leftists are quite organized about these kind of infantile political tactics. I would bet that many of JR’s love notes are from 20 somethings rather than the greatest generation. Media Matters, Daily Kos etc put up their daily messages for the followers to parrot and cut and paste. They probably are assigned to post at certain websites and call into certain shows. Hmmm…
Speaking of the inauthenticity of leftists invoking the deity it takes a back seat to leftists invoking a stupid imitation of some Southern dialect such as “y’all” and “kinda”.
Caps Lock. It’s not a way of life.
Mr. Hoeft, I don’t know who you are or what your financial status is but I find it sickening to read your comments on the emails you received. Either you know something about these people that says they are something other than who they say they are or you are typical crass Republican that has no concern for anyone not in your social level. The pendulum swings both ways
You can be sickened all you want, Louis, but the fact is our society changed when those much older than me agreed that policies advocated in the New Deal and the Great Society were acceptable for our constitutional republic. Capitalism was served a body-blow by those who favor strong central planning…and I wasn’t even born yet. I also fault those who were older who either did nothing to campaign against these policies or couldn’t stem them.
As for “knowing” – I know what they wrote in their emails. That’s all I need.
It seems that the 2012 election campaign is going to be long and dirty.
J.R., I don’t know what you mean by…”Capitalism was served a body-blow by those who favor strong central planning…” but I would observe two facts: the number of millionairres and entreprenuers has multiplied exceedingly fast, perhaps indicating that capitalism has certainly recovered, if it was harmed at all in the first place, and anyone who claims we have central planning is not particularly accurate.
Perhaps Barry and Al will come out with a new “hockey stick Mann” graph showing that failure to borrow yet more trillions of dollars is causing global warming.
Barry wants to sell our children into economic slavery to finance his reelection campaign. Thats all the debt ceiling fight is about. A corrupt chicago politician trying to buy an election.
This is a vile article. Are your parents dead, or do still live with them? Do you want to take your folks into your own home, or would you care if the remained independent?
These people changed your disgusting diapers, and I know they were really nasty as you are full of shit. Your parents, if they were any good at all (and one does have to wonder) provided for you, kept you safe, loved you and only wanted the best for you!
While raising you, at least one of them worked to provide food, shelter and clothes…never questioning their responsibility. Yeah, they left us all in quite the “mess”…
You, and your ilk, being the ignorant and heartless ass(es) that blame the very people who made you what you are today for this pathetic mess, instead of realizing that old “sin” greed as the culprit, want to abruptly turn your back on these folks. Youust really have had a rotten childhood.
Retirees have PAID their dues, and how you could, for one minute, think of turning your backs on the very people who raised you and fought to keep your country in your hands, is astonishing and in the very least disturbing!
Diana L. McIntosh
Diana,
Thank you for making assumptions about my home life and proving my point that the left is more about social corruption than doing what is right for the future of our country. I care more about the child who’s diapers I changed than the diapers that you’re certainly wearing now. You would have been better off had you not made poor choices before.
